F.O. 6, Charles Eggen 5 (League: 15-2, Overall: 18-6) - July 1 @ Jesuit High
For the second straight game the Oaks recorded a 6-5 win over Eastern
Division rival Charles Eggen. In one of those rare games we couldn't attend, the Oaks
trailed Eggen 4-1 after one inning of play, but picked away at the lead and came back
and scored three times in the sixth to go up by the final 6-5 margin. The Oaks outhit
Eggen 11-4 and pitcher Garrett Schoenfelder went the distance for the win. Kevin
McKeown, Andy Tews, Jason Wilkerson and Jeff Lincoln all had two hits, while
Reagan Reynolds added a double.
F.O. 15, Fort Sutter 0 (League: 16-2, Overall: 19-6) - July 3 @ Wm. Land Park
Maybe one of these days Post 383 will have a close game, but it wasn't to be
against Fort
Sutter as the Oaks ran away to another big victory, 15-0. Fair Oaks took a 5-0 first
inning lead for
starter Andy Tews, sending 10 batters to the plate. Catcher B.J. Crone led off with a
walk, followed by
center fielder Kevin McKeown's hit to left. Tews followed with another hit to left to
score Crone and then
first baseman Jason Wilkerson's hit up the middle scored McKeown and Tews for a
3-0 lead. Shortstop
Dennis Hunt followed with a sharply hit ball off the shortstop's glove and then second
baseman Reagan
Reynolds walked to load the bases. Wilkerson scored on right fielder Dan Wilson's
ground ball to short.
wilson was safe on an error. Third baseman Jeff Lincoln then hit into a double play,
but it scored Hunt
to give the Oaks a 5-0 lead. Fair Oaks added one in the second as McKeown led off
with a hit to left.
McKeown stole second with Tews at the plate and with one out and Wilkerson up to
bat, took third on a
bad pickoff by the pitcher. The center fielder was slow to throw the ball in and
McKeown scored for a 6-
0 lead. The Oaks made it 10-0 in the third as Reynolds led off with a walk. Wilson
followed with a hit to
right and then Lincoln hit a ball to third that was booted to load the bases. Matt
Blanford's grounder to
second scored Reynolds and then Crone hit a ball to right that was dropped. wilson
had held up
rounding third and was out at the plate. McKeown walked to load the bases and then
Tews tripled to
left to score Lincoln, Crone and McKeown for a 10-0 lead. In the fifth, four more runs
scored as
McKeown led off with a double. To groundouts followed by Tews and Wilkerson, but
that was enough
to get McKeown home. Hunt then doubled to left and Reynolds doubled to right to
score Hunt. Wilson
hit a ball off the third baseman's glove to score Reynolds. Jared Novak got a hit to left,
followed by a
Blanford hit that scored Wilson to make it 14-0. Jarred Hunt came in to relieve Tews
in the fifth, quickly
disposing of Fort Sutter. In the sixth, McKeown led off with a double to left center and
then scored on
Devon Nicholson's double to center for the Oaks' 15-0 lead. Brent Buchanan pitched
the sixth and
Dave Clinton mopped up in the seventh to preserve the shutout.
F.O. 10, Woodland 2 (League: 17-2, Overall: 20-6) - July 10 @ Bella Vista High
Post 383's game against Woodland lived up to its billing as being a close
contest - at least for a
few innings - as the Oaks broke open a 1-1 tie in the third and went on for a 10-2
victory over visiting
Post 77. It wasn't really one of the Oaks' better outings, but Fair Oaks capitalized on
numerous Yolo
errors for the win. In the first, Kevin McKeown's ground ball to third was booted and
he moved to
second on Andy Tews' hit to left. A pickoff to second went into center field and
McKeown went all the
way home to score and make it a 1-1 game. Post 77 tied it in the top of the third, but
the Oaks came
back to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning. With one out, McKeown got a hit to
right and he went to
second as Tews hit a ball to third that was bobbled. Jason Wilkerson walked to load
the bases and
then Dennis Hunt's hit to left scored McKeown. Reagan Reynolds then grounded to
first. The first
baseman waited for the pitcher and underhanded the toss to him, but Reynolds beat
the play and was
safe, with Tews scoring from third to make it 3-1. Fair Oaks exploded for seven more
runs in the fifth
as 11 batters came to the plate. McKeown led off being hit by a pitch, followed by
Tews' hit to right.
Wilkerson flew out, but McKeown tagged and went to third. Hunt then walked to load
the bases.
Reynolds hit a ball off the pitcher's mound and the ball took a late turn to the right of
the second
baseman, scoring both McKeown and Tews for a 5-1 lead. Matt Praz followed with a
double to right to
score Hunt and then Devon Nicholson hit a ball to third that was booted, scoring
Reynolds. Garrett
Schoenfelder's grounder to second went to short to get Nicholson, but Schoenfelder
was safe and Praz
scored to make it 8-1. B.J. Crone then doubled to right center to score Schoenfelder
and McKeown
followed with a double to left to score Crone to make it 10-1. Woodland went down in
order in the sixth
and could manage only one run in the seventh on a hit and an error for the final 10-2
score. The win
clinched the Oaks the No. 1 playoff seed, meaning Post 383 will have a first round
bye.
F.O. 13, Cordova 9 (League: 18-2, Overall: 21-6) - July 12 @ Cordova High
Fair Oaks overcame an early 7-0 deficit with a massive rally in the late-innings
to beat Cordova in the series opener, 13-9. Cordova led 1-0 in the first and scored
four more runs - mostly on errors - in the second for a 5-0 lead off starter Jim Ott.
Two runs followed in the third for a 7-0 lead off reliever Dan Wilson after Ott had given
up a leadoff single and Wilson gave up three straight hits, but the Oaks got two runs
back in the top of the fourth as Andy Tews walked, Jason Wilkerson was hit and
Reagan Reynolds got a single to right to load the bases with one out. With two outs,
Devon Nicholson's hit to right scored Tews and Wilkerson for a 7-2 game. Cordova
added a single run in the fourth and then in the fifth, Fair Oaks came back with four
runs to cut the deficit to 8-6. B.J. Crone and Kevin McKeown started things off with
back-to-back hits, followed by a walk to Tews. With Wilkerson at the plate, a wild pitch
scored Crone. Wilkerson walked and then Dennis Hunt's hit to center scored
McKeown. Reynolds hit a ball to short. The throw went to second, but the ball got
away and Tews scored to make it 8-5. Matt Praz grounded to third, with the throw
going to second and scoring Wilkerson as the relay to first was late making it 8-6. The
rally continued in the sixth as Garrett Schoenfelder and Crone drew consecutive
walks. McKeown's bunt advanced the runners and then with two outs, Wilkerson
walked to load the bases. A walk to Hunt forced in Schoenfelder to make it 8-7 and
then Reynolds' bloop hit to short left center scored Crone and Wilkerson for a 9-8 Fair
Oaks lead. Fair Oaks went up 12-8 in the eighth as Reynolds led off with a hit to
center and Praz was hit by a pitch. Nicholson bunted to advance the runners and then
Schoenfelder hit a ball that went between the legs of the shortstop, allowing Reynolds
and Praz to score. In the ninth, Fair Oaks added its last run as Hunt struck out with
two outs, but beat the throw to first after the ball got away from the catcher. Reynolds
then hit a high bouncer to short, resulting in no throw, sending Hunt to third. Reynolds
stole second with Praz at the plate and the throw went into center field allowing Hunt
to score. Cordova scored once in the bottom of the ninth off Stu Goodall who had
replaced Ott in the fifth for the final 13-9 score.
F.O. 15, Cordova 4 (League: 19-2, Overall: 22-6) - July 13 @ Bella Vista High
Unlike the game of the day before, Fair Oaks wasted little
time jumping all over Cordova with a seven run outburst in the first inning for starting
pitcher Jarred Hunt. The eventual 15-4 score even prompted the two teams to shorten
the scheduled nine inning contest to seven. Kevin McKeown led things off with a hit up
the middle, followed by walks to Reagan Reynolds and Andy Tews to load the bases.
Back-to-back doubles by Jason Wilkerson and Dennis Hunt brought home four runs.
Garrett Schoenfelder followed with a walk and then Devon Nicholson's routine fly to
right was dropped to score Hunt for a 5-0 lead. Designated hitter Jim Ott walked to
load the bases for the second time in the inning and then Schoenfelder tagged and
scored on Matt Blanford's fly to right. McKeown got his second hit of the inning with a
double to left center, scoring Nicholson for a 7-0 lead. Cordova came back with three
in the top of the second, but the Oaks responded with a run in the bottom of the
inning as Tews doubled to lead off and moved to third on a steal with Hunt at the
plate. The throw from the catcher went into left field, allowing Tews to come home and
make it an 8-3 game. The Oaks made it 10-3 in the third as Blanford drew a one out
walk. McKeown also walked and with Reynolds at the plate, a wild pitch advanced
both runners. Reynolds' fly to right scored Blanford and then Tews hit a ball deep to
short that resulted in no throw, scoring McKeown for a 10-3 lead. In the fourth,
Nicholson's two out double started things off, followed by a walk to Ott. With Blanford
at the plate, Nicholson stole third and the throw from the catcher again wound up in
left field allowing Nicholson to score to make it 11-3. Blanford then got a hit to right
center to score Ott for a 12-3 game. Cordova got a run back in the fifth, but the Oaks
came back in the bottom of the inning to score their final three runs. McKeown led off
with a double to left, followed by a walk to Reynolds. With one out, Wilkerson doubled
to center to score McKeown to make it 13-4. A groundout by Hunt scored Reynolds
and then Schoenfelder's hit to left scored Wilkerson for the 15-4 margin. Jarred Hunt
finished the sixth and was replaced by Brent Buchanan in the seventh. Despite an
error and a walk to start the inning, Buchanan got the next three outs for the 15-4
win.
F.O. 5, Cordova 4 (League: 20-2, Overall: 23-6) - July 13 @ Bella Vista High
It was the regular season finale for both teams and in typical
fashion, the Oaks gave the fans another good game - this time a thrilling come-from-
behind victory over Cordova, 5-4. Fair Oaks jumped on Cordova for two runs in the
first as catcher B.J. Crone was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning.
Second baseman Devon Nicholson then hit a ball to deep short, resulting in no throw.
Both runners advanced on left fielder Jason Wilkerson's ground ball to short. Shortstop
Dennis Hunt was then intentionally walked to load the bases and the next batter, first
baseman Matt Praz followed with a single to left to score Crone and Nicholson for a 2-
0 lead. In the fourth, Cordova scored four times off Post 383 starter Garrett
Schoenfelder, who until that time had faced only one batter over the minimum. A
leadoff error, followed by four hits and a walk resulted in Cordova taking a 4-2 lead.
Fair Oaks got one run back in the fifth as Hunt walked with one out and moved to
second on an infield hit by Praz. With two outs, pinch hitter Kevin McKeown blooped
a hit into center field to score Hunt to make it a 4-3 game. The Oaks tied it up in the
sixth as Jim Ott walked to lead off the inning. Matt Blanford went in to run at first and
then with Crone at the plate stole second. The throw from the catcher went into center
field moving Blanford to third. Crone's pop hit to center then scored Blanford to tie the
game. After a bunt hit by Nicholson, Crone eventually made it to third. He tried to
score on Wilkerson's fly to right, but held up and started back to the bag with
Nicholson also heading for third. Crone reversed direction and tried to score, but was
thrown out at the plate. Dave Clinton came in to pitch the top of the seventh, allowing
a double, but escaping with the tie intact. In the bottom of the seventh, Tews led off
with a walk and then stole second with McKeown at the plate. McKeown then sent a
solid hit to center that scored Tews for the 5-4 victory.
Elk Grove 8, F.O. 4 (League: 20-2, Overall: 23-7) - July 18 @ Clark Field
Elk Grove shocked Fair Oaks by upsetting the No. 1
seeded Oaks in Post 383's District 6 opener on Thursday in Woodland. It was a night
where nothing went right for Fair Oaks - errors, sloppy officiating on several key calls,
and a number of missed opportunities combined to defeat the Oaks who now must
win four straight games to claim the District title. The Oaks will play Friday and then if
they win will face a doubleheader on Saturday. A sweep there would put them into
sunday's championship game. Elk Grove, who the Oaks swept in the regular season,
went up 1-0 in the first and added a run in the second of starter Andy Tews. Three
more runs crossed the plate in the fourth before the Oaks got on the scoreboard in the
bottom of the inning. Dennis Hunt led off with a walk, but was forced at second on a
grounder to short by Reagan Reynolds. Devon Nicholson followed with a hit to left and
with Garrett Schoenfelder at the plate, a wild pitch advanced both runners.
Schoenfelder popped out, but then pinch hitter Matt Praz walked to load the bases.
B.J. Crone's hit to right scored both Reynolds and Nicholson to make it a 5-2 game.
Fair Oaks crept closer in the fifth as Tews led off with a hit to left. Tews stole second,
but tried to take third as the ball got away and was thrown out. With two outs, Dennis
Hunt drew a walk and stole second with Reynolds at the plate. Reynolds' hit to center
scored Hunt for a 5-3 game. Nicholson followed with a double to center to score
Reynolds to make it 5-4. Elk Grove loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but
Tews struck out the final batter to end the inning. The Oaks loaded the bases in the
bottom of the inning with no outs as Praz walked, Crone was hit and Kevin McKeown
walked. Tews then struck out and as Jason Wilkerson sent a fly to center, Praz
tagged and made for home. In a controversial call, the throw went to third to get
Crone and the umpire ruled that Praz had not yet crossed the plate and the run did
not score. Elk Grove came back in the seventh to score three more runs for an 8-4
lead. Neither team scored again despite chances on both sides and the game went to
Elk Grove by the final 8-4 score.
F.O. 12, Kennedy-Valley 8 (League: 20-2, Overall: 24-7) - July 19 @ Clark Field
Fair Oaks finally showed some life with a come-from-
behind victory over Kennedy-Valley, 12-8. The Oaks jumped out to a 4-0 lead for
starting pitcher Jim Ott in the first inning as Kevin McKeown hit a one out double to
left center. Andy Tews followed with a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch
with Jason Wilkerson at the plate. Wilkerson's hit to left scored both McKeown and
Tews for a 2-0 lead. Dennis Hunt followed with a walk and then with two out, Devon
Nicholson also walked to load the bases. Matt Praz's hit to left scored Wilkerson and
Hunt to make it a 4-0 game. Unfortunately for the Oaks, Kennedy-Valley came right
back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and then went up 8-4 in the second.
Ott loaded the bases with no outs to start the inning and after a triple made it 7-4, was
replaced on the mound by Garrett Schoenfelder. A hit off Schoenfelder made it 8-4,
but the Oaks got out of the inning with no further damage. Fair Oaks got two runs
back in the fifth as McKeown led off with a hit to left followed by a walk to Tews and a
hit to left by Wilkerson to load the bases. Hunt's hit scored McKeown to make it 8-5
and then a ground out by Reagan Reynolds made it 8-6 as Tews crossed the plate. In
the sixth, the Oaks took the lead as Praz led off with a hit to center. Stu Goodall
followed with a bunt. The pitcher fielded the ball and threw to second, but the throw
went into center field advancing Praz to third. B.J. Crone's hit to left scored Praz and
then a wild pickoff throw with McKeown at the plate scored Goodall to make it 8-8.
McKeown sent a fly to center that allowed Crone to tag from third and score, giving
the Oaks a 9-8 lead. Fair Oaks padded its advantage in the ninth as Reynolds led off
with a hit to center. He moved to second on Nicholson's grounder to short. Praz
followed with a hit to center and then Goodall walked to load the bases. Crone's hit up
the middle scored Reynolds and Praz and then McKeown walked to re-load the bases.
Kennedy-Valley changed pitchers, but Tews, the next batter, managed a fly to center
to score Goodall for the final run of the game and a 12-8 lead. Schoenfelder shut KV
down in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.
Woodland 10, F.O. 2 (League: 20-2, Overall: 24-8) - July 20 @ Clark Field
All season long the Oaks looked like a playoff team,
compiling a 20-0 record against other District 6 teams. But when it actually came time
for the playoffs, the magic disappeared as Woodland sent the Oaks down to their
second defeat in three games and eliminated Fair Oaks from the post-season. Jarred
Hunt, who has looked sharp in his last few starts for the Oaks, continued that trend as
the game remained a scoreless pitcher's duel through four innings. Fair Oaks finally
got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Jason Wilkerson led off with a walk
and was bunted to second by Dennis Hunt. Reagan Reynolds followed with a walk,
putting two runners on with one out. Devon Nicholson flew to right for the second out,
but then Matt Praz sent a hit down the line to left to score Wilkerson for a 1-0 lead.
Despite three consecutive hits by Woodland in the top of the fifth, Post 77 failed to
score as one runner was caught stealing and another was picked off by Hunt. Fair
Oaks held its 1-0 lead into the seventh when Woodland scored three runs. Two
consecutive hits to start the inning chased Hunt off the mound as Post 77 tied the
game. Stu Goodall came in to relieve, but quickly loaded the bases on a walk and an
error and two more runs scored before the inning was done. Woodland exploded in
the top of the eighth to take an 8-1 lead. Two hits to start the inning prompted
manager Don Barney to replace Goodall with Dave Clinton, but Clinton was ineffective
as he hit the first batter he faced and gave up a base hit to the next, scoring a run for
a 5-1 lead. Two outs followed, but the next batter hit a three-run homer to left to give
Woodland an 8-1 lead. The Oaks came back for one run in the bottom of the eighth.
With one out, Wilkerson hit a ball that found its way through the legs of the shortstop
for an error and Dennis Hunt followed with a hit to put two runners on. Reynolds then
hit into a play that forced Hunt at second, but beat the throw to first to avoid the
double play. Nicholson followed with a hit to score Wilkerson to make it an 8-2 game.
Woodland came back to score twice in the ninth for a 10-2 lead. The Oaks looked
lifeless in the bottom of the inning as Ott struck out and Crone flew to left to start the
bottom of the ninth. Hope stirred briefly in the hearts of the fans as the Oaks looked
like they might start one of their famous two out rallies. McKeown was hit by a pitch
and Tews walked, but then Wilkerson struck out. The ball got away from the catcher,
but the throw easily beat Wilkerson to first for the final out of the game.
