Manhart/KV 11, Fair Oaks 4 (League: 0-0, Overall: 0-1) - May 24 @ William Land Park - It wasn't exactly the way the Oaks hoped the season would open, but Fair Oaks Post 383 had to endure a season-opening loss to Manhart/KV (formerly known as Kennedy-Valley) 11-4 in the Memorial Day Tournament at William Land Park May 24.
Manhart pounded Fair Oaks pitching for 15 hits, driving starter Rick Ryan from the game in the third inning in favor of Dave Yurchak.
Manhart scored three runs in each of the first three innings to take a 9-1 lead. Fair Oaks' only run in the early innings came in the second as Russ Beldi was hit by a pitch and then doubled home by Nick Palumbo, who had three hits on the day.
The Oaks closed the score to 9-4 in the fourth as Palumbo reached base on an error by the third baseman with one out. Chris Rhines was hit by a pitch to put two runners on and then Bryan Lynch singled to score Palumbo for a 9-2 game.
Rick Patel singled to load the bases and then a walk to Yurchak forced in Rhines to make it a 9-3 score. The Oaks' final run scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Matt Blanford to score Lynch and make it 9-4.
Manhart scored two more runs in the top of the seventh for the final 11-4 tally. Palumbo's double in the second inning and a double by Eric Archuleta were the Oaks' only extra-base hits on the day.
