Fair Oaks 12, Cordova 2 (League: 11-2, Overall: 15-3) - June 21 @ Bella Vista High School - Fair Oaks completed its three-game sweep of Cordova, winning the second game of their doubleheader 12-2.
Unlike the first game, the Oaks dominated Game 2 from start to finish, receiving a complete-game pitching performance from Brandon Olson and bashing out 14 hits.
Fair Oaks went up 4-0 in the first inning as B.J. Crone led off with a hit. With one out, Jason Wilkerson walked and then Crone scored on Nick Palumbo's hit to left.
Jim Ott followed with a hit down the first base line to score Wilkerson and then Russ Beldi's hit to right scored Palumbo to make it 3-0. Matt Blanford's sacrifice to center scored Ott to make it a 4-0 Fair Oaks advantage.
The Oaks added three more runs in the second off a new Cordova pitcher as Garrett Schoenfelder started things off with a one out hit to left. Hits by Wilkerson and Palumbo brought home Schoenfelder for a 5-0 lead, and then Ott's hit to right loaded the bases.
With two outs, Blanford got a hit that just escaped the third baseman to score Palumbo and Wilkerson to make it 7-0.
Olson sent Cordova down in order in the top of the third and the Oaks came back for three more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Dave Yurchak led off with a hit and then with one out, Schoenfelder walked. With two outs, Palumbo came to the plate and slammed a home run to left, scoring Yurchak, Schoenfelder and himself for a 10-0 lead. Ott and Beldi followed with hits, as well, but did not score.
Palumbo's home run was the Oaks' 20th of the year (in 18 games). Last year Fair Oaks only had 16 for the entire season and in 1995 the team had 24 in 39 games in its drive to the state playoffs.
The Oaks scored another run in the fourth as three consecutive walks to Justin Hoppes, Yurchak and Bryan Lynch loaded the bases. Schoenfelder, the next batter, hit a dribbler in front of the plate, resulting in a force of Hoppes at the plate, but then Wilkerson's ground ball to third scored Yurchak to make it a 11-0 game.
Three straight hits in the top of the fifth brought home two runs for the Cordova team, but the Oaks answered back with a run in the sixth for the final 12-2 tally.
Yurchak was hit by a pitch to start things off and then with one out, Schoenfelder doubled to left. Sean Chopelas followed with another hit to left to score Yurchak for the final run of the game.
Olson downed Cordova in order in the top of the seventh on a pop to first and a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
