Fair Oaks 14, Citrus Heights 3 (League: 13-3, Overall: 17-4) - June 28 @ Del Campo High - Fair Oaks played home run derby in its opening game of a three-game set against Citrus Heights as the Oaks pounded the ball over the fence seven times en route to a 14-3 victory.
Post 383 went up 3-0 in the first inning as center fielder Matt Blanford received a one out walk, shortstop Garrett Schoenfelder slammed a two-run homer over the left field fence, and designated hitter Nick Palumbo hit a two-out homer over the right field fence.
In the second, two more runs scored as second baseman Rick Patel led off with a ground ball to third that was booted and then with two outs, catcher B.J. Crone put the ball over the right field fence for a 5-0 lead.
In the third, Schoenfelder led off with his second home run of the game over the right field fence. Right fielder Jason Wilkerson followed with a left field homer for a 7-0 lead.
On the mound, pitcher Jim Ott continued to get the outs, allowing only one hit through the seventh inning.
Fair Oaks went up 9-0 in the fifth as Wilkerson got a two out hit to center and with Palumbo at the plate advanced to third on two wild pitches. Palumbo walked and then stole second with first baseman Russ Beldi at the plate.
The throw toward second to get Palumbo got away and Wilkerson scored. Beldi then got a hit to left to score Palumbo and make it a 9-0 game.
Fair Oaks made it 10-0 in the sixth as third baseman Justin Hoppes beat out a bunt toward third. With Crone at the plate, a passed ball moved Hoppes to second and then with two out, he scored as Schoenfelder's ground ball to third resulted in a bad throw to first for a run-scoring error.
In the seventh, the Oaks went up 11-0 on Patel's first home run of the year. Citrus Heights finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth with a single run, but the Oaks answered back in the top of the ninth with three more runs.
Wilkerson led off with a hit to left and then scored on a Beldi home run to left with one out. With two outs, Bryan Lynch doubled to left and then scored on Chris Rhines' hit to right to give the Oaks a 14-1 lead.
Dave Yurchak came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth. The Oaks defense failed behind him, however, as two errors and a double resulted in a pair of runs scoring for the final 14-3 score.
