Fair Oaks 17, Citrus Heights 10 (League: 17-4, Overall: 28-6) - July 12 @ Renfree Field - Seven runs in the top of the ninth inning gave Fair Oaks a 17-10 win in the opening game of the District 6 playoffs at Renfree Field.
The Oaks jumped on Citrus Heights for two runs in the first inning as catcher B.J. Crone led off with a double to center field.
First baseman Jim Ott followed with a bunt to the pitcher. Ott beat the throw to first, with Crone making his way all the way to third base.
Shortstop Garrett Schoenfelder followed with a hit to right field to score Crone and then right fielder Jason Wilkerson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Third baseman Justin Hoppes then sent a ground ball to first that was booted and Ott scored for the Oaks' 2-0 lead.
After starting pitcher Adam Moshofsky sent Citrus Heights down in order in the bottom of the first, the Oaks had an even better second inning, scoring five times for a 7-0 lead.
Center fielder Matt Blanford led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and moved to second on left fielder Bryan Lynch's bunt that went pitcher to first.
Crone followed with a hit to left and with Ott at the plate stole second. Ott doubled to score both Blanford and Crone to make it 4-0 and then Schoenfelder followed with a hit to center to score Ott to make it 5-0.
Wilkerson, the next batter, got hit by a pitch and then Hoppes got a hit to left to load the bases.
Designated hitter Nick Palumbo followed with a hit to left to score Schoenfelder and then Ricky Patel's grounder to third was booted to score Wilkerson for a 7-0 Oaks lead.
Moshofsky sent Citrus Heights down in order again in the second and the Oaks made it a 9-0 lead in the third as Lynch led off with a hit to left.
Citrus Heights replaced starting pitcher John Beaven with Jared Watson, who promptly got the next two batters out. But Schoenfelder followed with a double to right center to score Lynch and then with Wilkerson at the plate moved to third on a passed ball. Wilkerson then followed with a fly to right that went off the right fielder's glove and allowed Schoenfelder to score to make it a 9-0 game.
Citrus Heights came back with a five run third inning to close the gap to 9-5 and added a single run in the fifth to cut Fair Oaks' lead to 9-6.
The Oaks came back for one run in the top of the sixth, however, as Wilkerson tripled with one out and then scored on Hoppes' bouncer over third.
Citrus Heights closed the score to 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth and then tied the game in the seventh at 10-10. Moshofsky gave up a leadoff walk in the seventh and was replaced on the mound by Schoenfelder, but Schoenfelder gave up a hit and walk to load the bases with one out and Citrus Heights came back to score three times to tie the game.
The score remained tied until the top of the ninth when the Oaks exploded for seven runs.
Lynch led off with a double to right, followed by an intentional walk to Crone and a bunt by Ott that turned into a hit on a low throw to first. The play scored Lynch to make it 11-10 and then Scoenfelder doubled to score Crone and Ott to make it 13-10.
Schoenfelder advanced to third on Wilkerson's fly to right and then scored on Hoppes' fly to left to make it 14-10.
Russ Beldi followed with a double to center field and then Patel's hit to left center for a double scored Beldi.
Blanford followed with a triple to left to score Patel and then Lynch tripled, scoring Blanford for the Oaks' 17-10 lead.
Brandon Olson replaced Ott on the mound for the ninth inning. Ott had come in to start the eighth against Citrus Heights, replacing Schoenfelder. Despite giving up two hits and a walk to load the bases, Olson got out of the inning with the Oaks' 17-10 lead intact for the win.
