Elk Grove 15, Fair Oaks 8 (League: 17-4, Overall: 28-7) - July 13 @ Renfree Field - Despite gaining a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Fair Oaks played catch up for most of its game against Elk Grove, eventually losing a 15-8 decision in the second round of the District 6 playoffs.
Catcher B.J. Crone led off the game with a double to left and moved to third on pitcher Jim Ott's bunt. Crone scored on a hit up the middle by shortstop Garrett Schoenfelder and then cleanup hitter Jason Wilkerson slammed a home run over the center field fence for a 3-0 Oaks lead.
Unfortunately for Fair Oaks, Elk Grove came back to score five runs in the bottom of the first to take a lead they'd never give up.
Fair Oaks did tie the game in the second as left fielder Bryan Lynch led off with a triple and then scored on Crone's double to right. Crone moved to third on a bunt by Ott and then scored on a wild pitch with Wilkerson at the plate to tie the game at 5-5.
Elk Grove came right back to score three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-5 lead, however.
With one out, Ott, who had pitched in relief the night before, was touched for a double, triple and double to bring home two runs. Brandon Olson came in to replace Ott on the mound and after gaining one out, gave up a hit to score the third run of the inning for an 8-5 Elk Grove lead.
Fair Oaks got one run back in the fourth as Crone drew a one out walk. An errant pickoff play put Crone on third and then Schoenfelder's two out grounder to deep short scored Crone as Schoenfelder beat the throw to first.
Elk Grove came back for a run in the bottom of the fourth, three more in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 14-6 lead.
Fair Oaks closed the gap to 14-8 in the eighth as third baseman Justin Hoppes was hit by a pitch to start things off. A wild pitch with Ricky Patel at the plate sent Hoppes to second and then he scored on Patel's double to left center.
With center fielder Matt Blanford at the plate, a balk sent Patel to third and then Blanford's ground out second to first scored Patel to make it 14-8.
Elk Grove came back for a single run in the bottom of the eighth off Dave Yurchak, who replaced Ott in the seventh, for a 15-8 lead.
The Oaks failed to score in the ninth despite a leadoff hit by Crone and Elk Grove held on to win the game 15-8, sending Fair Oaks into the loser's bracket.
