Fair Oaks 9, New York 4 (League: 15-4, Overall: 24-5) - July 5 @ Fairfield - Fair Oaks continued to roll in the Mr. C Ttournament with a fairly easy victory over a highly touted New York team, 9-4.
The Oaks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as center fielder B.J. Crone led off with a walk. A hit to center by first baseman Jim Ott followed and then with two outs, designated hitter Nick Palumbo followed with a walk to load the bases.
Third baseman Justin Hoppes then sent a fly to left field for what looked like the third out, but New York's left fielder apparently never picked up the ball as it fell in behind him allowing both Crone and Ott to score for a 2-0 lead.
The Oaks scored a third run for starting pitcher Russ Beldi in the third as shortstop Garrett Schoenfelder led off with a fly to left. This time the left fielder saw the ball, but he dropped it and Schoenfelder was safe on the error.
With two outs, Hoppes followed with a hit to left field that got by New York's left fielder, scoring Schoenfelder for a 3-0 lead.
New York finally got on the board in the bottom of the third as a walk, hit batsman and three hits brought home four runs to put New York in the lead 4-3.
The Oaks came right back, however, scoring two times to jump back ahead, 5-4.
Second baseman Rick Patel led off with a double to center and was moved to third on a bunt by left fielder Matt Blanford. The play went to third late and both runners were safe.
Catcher Brad Hicks followed with a ground ball to short that turned into a double play, but Patel scored to tie the game at 4-4. Crone followed with a hit to left and then stole second with Ott at the plate.
Ott doubled to score Crone and the Oaks again owned the lead with a 5-4 score.
After Beldi put down New York in order in the bottom of the fourth, the Oaks came back for four more runs for a 9-4 lead.
Palumbo led off with a walk and moved to second on a bunt by Hoppes. Patel followed with a hit to right, sending Palumbo to third and then Blanford beat out the throw on a grounder to third to load the bases.
Hicks followed with a ground ball to short that was booted allowing Palumbo to score. Crone then doubled to right to score Patel and Blanford and Ott sent a fly to right that allowed Hicks to score for a 9-4 lead.
The Oaks didn't score again and Beldi shut down New York the rest of the way for the 9-4 complete-game victory.
