Fair Oaks 13, Martinez 5 (League: 15-4, Overall: 25-5) - July 6 @ Napa Valley College - Having finished the regular part of the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record, the Fair Oaks Oaks were matched against Martinez in Sunday's contest to decide who would advance to Monday's championship round.
Fair Oaks again had no problems picking up a win as they defeated the Martinez team 13-5 at Napa Valley College.
Fair Oaks went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first as pitcher Jim Ott reached base on an error with one out and advanced to second on shortstop Garrett Schoenfelder's hit to center.
With two outs, Ott scored on Second baseman Rick Patel's hit to center for the 1-0 lead.
Martinez evened the game up in the second, but the Oaks came back in the bottom of the inning for two more runs and a 3-1 lead.
Right fielder Chris Rhines led off with a walk, but was erased on first baseman Russ Beldi's bunt back to the pitcher.
With two outs, however, Beldi and catcher B.J. Crone scored on Crone's towering home run over the left field fence for a 3-1 Fair Oaks advantage.
Martinez went out in order in the third and the Oaks came back for three more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Two straight bad hops to short put Schoenfelder and right fielder Jason Wilkerson on base and then with Patel at the plate, a bad pickoff scored Schoenfelder for a 4-1 lead.
Patel tripled to center, scoring Wilkerson for a 5-1 game and then center fielder Matt Blanford got a hit to left to score Patel and make it 6-1.
Martinez came back for two runs in the fourth, but again the Oaks answered back for a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 8-3.
With one out, Schoenfelder popped a ball directly over the pitcher's mound, but the pitcher couldn't find it and it dropped in for a hit.
With two outs, Patel walked and then Blanford tripled to left center to score both runners for the 8-3 lead.
Martinez closed the gap to 8-5 in the top of the fifth, with Fair Oaks scoring a lone run in the bottom of the inning.
After groundouts to short by both Beldi and Sean Chopelas, Crone got a hit to left. With Ott at the plate, Crone stole second. Ott walked and then Schoenfelder got a hit to right to score Crone and make it 9-5.
Martinez went out in order in top of the sixth and the Oaks scored the reaminder of their 13 runs in the bottom of the inning.
Wilkerson led off with a hit to left and then Patel put down a perfect bunt for a hit to put two runners on. Blanford followed with a home run to left to make it a 12-5 game and then with one out, Beldi got a hit to left.
With two outs, Crone doubled to center (the ball bounced over the fence) and Beldi scored to make it a 13-5 Fair Oaks lead.
All Martinez could manage in the top of the seventh off Ott was a two out walk and the Oaks recorded a 13-5 victory to send them into Monday's semi-final against Solano Concrete.
