Fair Oaks 9, Ft. Sutter 3 (League: 7-4, Overall: 7-5) - June 23 @ Renfree Field -
The Oaks jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings en route to a 9-3 victory over
Fort Sutter at Renfree Field.
Fair Oaks went up 1-0 after only one pitch as leadoff
batter center fielder L.J. Sneath slammed the ball over the left center field fence for a
home run. Second baseman Nic DeRose followed with a walk, but was erased as
catcher Todd Jennings hit a ball to third, with the play going to second for the out.
Jennings stole second with right fielder Joe Caffrey at the plate. The throw from the
catcher went into center field and Jennings made it safely to third. Caffrey popped out
to first, but then shortstop Jeff Williams got a bad hop hit past third to score Jennings
and make it 2-0. First baseman Pat Bryant then doubled to left center to score
Williams and Bryant landed at third on the throw to the plate. Designated hitter Doug
Matlack then hit a ball to second that spun out of the reach of Ft. Sutter's fielder for a
hit, scoring Bryant for a 4-0 Fair Oaks lead.
The Oaks picked up two more runs in the bottom of the
second as left fielder Eric Battenberg hit a smash back up the middle off the pitcher's
leg. Sneath was hit by a pitch to put two runners on and then DeRose hit a ball to
second that was booted to load the bases. Jennings followed with a hit to right that
scored Battenberg, but then the Oaks ran into base running problems as DeRose tried
for third only to find Sneath still standing on the bag. DeRose ran back toward second,
eventually getting tagged out, but the play allowed Sneath to score to make it a 6-0
game.
Fort sutter got a run back in the third, but the Oaks went
up 7-1 in the bottom of the inning as Williams led off with a hit to center field. Bryant
followed with a hit up the middle to put two on, forcing a Fort Sutter pitching change.
Matlack bunted on the new hurler, moving both runners over and then with two outs
and Battenberg at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Williams to score for the 7-1
lead.
Fort Sutter came back with its second run in the top of the
fourth, but the Oaks answered back again in the bottom of the inning with two more
runs.
With two outs, Jennings drew a walk and then Caffrey
followed with a towering home run over the left field fence to make it 9-2.
Fort Sutter scored in the sixth to make it 9-3 and despite
loading the bases off Oaks' starter Ryan Mink, couldn't score again. Matlack came on
in relief in the top of the seventh. The first batter he faced popped up on the infield.
The ball fell in, but a force at second and a double play resulted in the Oaks getting
out of the inning and preserving the 9-3 win.
