Fair Oaks 14, Manhart 6 (League: 1-1, Overall: 1-1) - May 29 @ Land Park - Fair
Oaks came back in its second game of the season for a big win, beating Manhart by a
score of 14-6.
The Oaks jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning.
Center fielder L.J. Sneath started things off with a home run to center field. Originally
it was called a ground rule double as the ball rolled into the outfield bushes at Land
Park. But after Manhart's center fielder threw his arms up to signal the ball unplayable,
he pursued the ball into the bushes and the umpire signaled it live and Sneath
continued around the bases for the home run.
Designated hitter Doug Matlack followed with a double to
left. He advanced to third on a wild pitch with catcher Todd Jennings at the plate.
Jennings then walked and shortstop John Perkins followed with a hit to center to score
Matlack and make it 2-0.
Left Fielder Ryan Mink then drove a ball into right.
Manhart's right fielder tried for a diving catch, but the ball got by him and Mink
advanced all the way to third, with Jennings and Perkins scoring to make it 4-0.
With one out, first baseman Pat Bryant tripled to right to
score Mink and then he scored as the next batter, right fielder Joe Caffrey, sent
another triple into right to make it a 6-0 game.
Welcoming a new Manhart pitcher in the second, Fair
Oaks loaded the bases, but failed to bring anyone home. Manhart strung together two
hits off Post 383 starter Alex Graham after a leadoff error in the bottom of the inning
to score its first run. Another run followed to make it 6-2.
The Oaks came back to score four more runs in the third,
however, increasing their lead to 10-2.
Caffrey led off with a walk, followed by a hit to center by
second baseman Jeff Williams. Caffrey was able to take third on the hit, with
Williams advancing to second on the throw in. Matlack walked to load the bases and
then Jennings tripled to left to score all three runners. He scored as well as the throw
came in off-line and got away, making it a 10-2 game.
Fair Oaks increased its lead to 13-2 in the fourth as
Caffrey drew a one out walk to start things off. Williams doubled to right and then
Sneath's hit to left scored Caffrey to make it 11-2. Matlack followed with a hit to left to
score Williams and drive Manhart's second pitcher from the game. The new pitcher
walked Jennings to load the bases and then Perkins' fly to center allowed Sneath to
tag and score from third making it a 13-2 game.
Manhart added three runs in the fifth to close the gap to
13-5, but the Oaks came back for a run in the top of the sixth for a 14-5 lead.
Sneath led off with a walk, but was erased on a double
play ball off the bat of Matlack. Caffrey then sent a fly into center that was dropped,
allowing him to reach second. Perkins followed with a hit to left to score Caffrey and
make it 14-5.
Eric Battenberg came in to relieve Graham on the mound
to start the bottom of the sixth. Battenberg got the first two batters out before giving up
a walk, but got the third out on a ground ball to short.
Fair Oaks made some rumblings in the seventh off yet
another new Manhart pitcher, but were unable to score. Battenberg gave up two
consecutive walks with one out in the bottom of the inning and then a hit to center
gave Manhart its sixth and final run. A double play ended they inning and game, giving
the Oaks the 14-6 victory.
