Southside 6, Fair Oaks 3 (League: 10-7, Overall: 12-10) - July 10 @ Renfree Field - Southside broke a 3-3 tie with Fair Oaks in the fourth inning en route to a 6-3 victory in their opening game of the American Legion District 6 playoffs at Renfree Field.
Fair Oaks took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning as right fielder Jeff Williams started things off with a walk. Second baseman Nic DeRose moved Williams to second with a sacrifice bunt and then Williams scored as catcher Todd Jennings hit a ball just out of the reach of Southside's second baseman Alec Smith. Jennings moved to second on the throw home and then scored to make it a 2-0 game as shortstop John Perkins got a hit down the third base line.
Southside came back for three runs in the bottom of the inning to grab the lead away from Fair Oaks, but Post 383 tied the game back up in the top of the second as left fielder Joe Caffrey started things off with a one out hit to left center. First baseman Ross Elmendorf followed with a double down the left field line to move Caffrey to third. Caffrey scored on Williams' ground ball to shortstop to knot the game up at 3-3.
Southside went back up by one run in the bottom of the fourth and that proved to be the only run they would need as Fair Oaks failed to score again. Insurance runs were added in the sixth and seventh innings for a 6-3 Southside lead. Alex Graham came in with two out in the seventh in relief of starter Robert Wilkerson, getting the final batter of the inning to ground out.
The Oaks managed one base runner in the eighth as Jennings reached on a one out error, but the inning ended as Perkins hit into a double play. In the ninth, third baseman Joe Liebman reached base with one out, but pinch hitter L.J. Sneath flew to right field and Caffrey struck out to end the game and send the Oaks into the loser's bracket on Sunday.
