Post 61 14, Fair Oaks 13 (League: 10-7, Overall: 12-11) - July 11 @ Renfree Field -
Fair Oaks' season ended in its second game of the District 6 playoffs as Post 61
overcame an Oaks comeback to win in 10 innings, 14-13.
Fair Oaks took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning as center
fielder L.J. Sneath led off with a walk. Second baseman Nic DeRose put down a bunt
to move Sneath to second and then with catcher Todd Jennings at the plate, Sneath
stole third. Jennings then grounded out to score Sneath to give the Oaks an early
lead.
Post 61 tied the game up in the second, but the Oaks
came right back in the top of the third to move back up by one run, 2-1. With one out,
Sneath powered a home run to dead center field for the Fair Oaks lead.
Post 61 again tied the game in the fourth and then moved
ahead as two more runs scored to make it 4-2. Fair Oaks got one run back in the top
of the fifth as designated hitter Doug Matlack got a hit to left center with one out.
Sneath followed with a walk to push Matlack to second and then with two outs,
Jennings got a hit to left to score Matlack to make it 4-3.
Post 61 scored two more runs in the fifth and then
seemingly put the game out of reach in the sixth with four runs.
Oaks' starter Manny Parra ran into problems early in the
sixth, giving up two consecutive doubles and a run for a 7-3 Post 61 lead. Alex
Graham took the mound in relief, but fared no better, giving up four consecutive hits
and a walk as the Oaks fell behind 10-3. Ryan Mink took the mound and got the final
out of the inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Oaks got a leadoff homer
from first baseman Ross Elmendorf as he drilled the first pitch over the left field fence.
But Post 61 added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to go up by a score of
12-4.
The Oaks faced a relief pitcher in the eighth - and it was a
relief for Post 383, as the Oaks scored eight runs to tie the game at 12-12.
Consecutive walks to Jennings and shortstop John Perkins
were followed by a hit to left center by third baseman Joe Liebman that loaded the
bases. Right fielder Jeff Williams then popped a ball behind first that was dropped.
Jennings scored and the bases were still loaded. Left fielder Joe Caffrey then walked
to force in Perkins to make it 12-6. With one out, Matlack got a hit to left to score
Liebman, and Sneath followed with a hit down the left field line to score Williams and
Caffrey. Post 61 put a new pitcher in, but he didn't fare much better. After getting the
second out of the inning on a ground ball, Jennings got a hit to right to score Matlack
and Perkins got a hit up the middle to score DeRose. Liebman followed with a hit to
left to score Jennings, tying the game at 12-12.
The game remained knotted until the top of the 10th when
Jennings led off with a hit to right. Perkins bunted Jennings to second and then
Liebman followed with a hit to score Jennings and give the Oaks a 13-12 lead. The
Oaks went on to load the bases as Caffrey got a two out hit and Elmendorf hit a ball
off the mound that resulted in no play. Fair Oaks couldn't pad its slim lead, however,
which would come back to haunt them in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, two consecutive doubles tied the game.
Mink intentionally walked the next batter to set up the force play, but then
unintentionally walked the next to load the bases. The next batter hit the ball deep to
left field, scoring the runner on third to give Post 61 the 14-13 win.
