Yolo 2, Fair Oaks 1
(League: 2-2, Overall: 2-3) - June 6 @ Clark Field, Woodland - If Fair
Oaks starter Robert Wilkerson could have that one pitch back - or perhaps that error
at third base - the Oaks probably would have been on the other side of the 2-1 score
June 6 at Woodland's Clark Field. But as fate would have it, Post 383 dropped to 2-2
in District 6 play with its second one-run loss of the year.
Even in defeat, this was a game for Fair Oaks fans to
watch, as Wilkerson pitched his way out of several tight spots and the Oaks came
ever so close to the elusive hit that could have won the game for them.
Wilkerson gave up three straight walks in the bottom of the
first to load the bases with one out, but managed to strike out the next batter he faced
for out two and pop the next batter up to second to close the inning.
Fair Oaks came back in the top of the second to score a
run and take a 1-0 lead over Post 77. Center fielder Ryan Mink led off with a hit to
center and moved to second on first baseman Ross Elmendorf's ground ball to Yolo
second baseman Eddie Lavorico. A wild pitch with third baseman Joe Liebman at the
plate sent Mink to third and he scored on Liebman's hit up the middle to make it
1-0.
Wilkerson got into trouble again in the bottom of the third
as a hit batsman and two singles loaded the bases with no outs. But Wilkerson struck
out the next two batters and got the third to ground out to short to end the inning. In
the fourth, Yolo had runners on second and third with one out, but still couldn't get a
run home, as Wilkerson got the next two batters to strike out and pop up.
Yolo finally tied the game in the sixth after Wilkerson
struck out the first two batters he faced. Center fielder Anthony Salvemini popped a
two-ball, two-strike pitch over the left field fence to make it a 1-1 game.
Neither team was able to score through the seventh
inning, sending the game into extra-innings.
Fair Oaks got two runners on in the eighth as Jake Jerue
reached on a high throw from short that skidded off the first baseman's glove.
Shortstop John Perkins followed with a hit to center, but the next batter hit into a
double play to end the inning.
Yolo went quietly in the bottom of the inning, as did Fair
Oaks in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, an error by Todd Wanta on a
sharply hit ball to third got Yolo's leadoff batter Jim Jordon on. With Yolo first baseman
David Butterworth at the plate, a wild pitch by Wilkerson sent Jordan to second and
then Jordon stole third. Butterworth walked to put two runners on and with catcher
Ryan Adams at the plate made an uncontested steal of second. Adams grounded to
shortstop, With Perkins throwing home to catcher Todd Jennings for the out. The next
batter walked to load the bases. Unfortunately, Wilkerson couldn't pull another rabbit
out of his hat, as the next batter, Lavorico, went a ball down the line at third that
brought home the winning run.
