Fair Oaks 14, Haggin Grant 12 (League: 3-2, Overall: 3-3) - June 8 @ Bella Vista High -
Looking like some of the great Fair Oaks teams of the past, the Oaks overcame a 6-0
first inning deficit to come back and beat Haggin Grant in extra-innings, 14-12. Post
383 scored 10 runs in the final three innings for the win, including a two-run home run
by third baseman Joe Liebman in the eighth to break a 12-12 tie and win the
game.
Fair Oaks starter Alex Graham didn't survive the first
inning as Haggin Grant pounded six straight hits before the Oaks recorded an out.
Center fielder Ryan Mink was also lost for the rest of the game during that stretch as
he dived for a ball that was hit to center and came up injured. An error and another hit
resulted in a 5-0 Haggin Grant lead, chasing Graham from the game in favor of Ross
Elmendorf. The first batter Elmendorf faced hit a ball to deep short resulting in another
run and a safe call at first, but the next batter grounded out to end the inning with
Haggin Grant leading 6-0.
Fair Oaks went out in order in their half of the first and
Haggin Grant came back in the top of the second to load the bases with one out.
Elmendorf recorded a strike out and a ground ball to get out of the inning,
however.
The Oaks finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of
the second as Liebman hit a towering shot over the left field fence with one out to
make it a 6-1 game.
Elmendorf got Haggin out in order in the third and the
Oaks came back for another two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-3. Right
fielder Joe Caffrey led off with a ground rule double to right field and then with one
out, shortstop John Perkins homered over the left center field fence to cut the margin
to 6-3. Post 383 loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to bring any further
runs home.
Haggin Grant got another run in the fourth after two were
out and added another pair in the fifth for a 9-3 lead. The Oaks got one back in the
bottom of the inning as second baseman Nic DeRose got a one out double down the
left field line. With two outs, L.J. Sneath, who had replaced Mink in center field in the
first, got a hit by short to score DeRose to make it 9-4.
After giving up a hit to right, Elmendorf was replaced on
the mound with one out in the top of the sixth by Manny Parra. Parra got into a little
trouble as a dropped fly in center and a close play at second resulted in Haggin Grant
loading the bases. A walk scored one run and then a ground ball to short was bobbled
allowing another run to score for an 11-4 Haggin Grant lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fair Oaks rallied to close the
gap to three runs as left fielder Jeff Williams led off with a double to left. First
baseman Pat Bryant's hit to right scored Williams. Bryant was later eliminated at third
on a sharply hit ball to short by Caffrey. Pinch hitter Eric Battenberg then walked and
a Perkins hit to left scored Caffrey to make it 11-6.
With a new pitcher on the mound, DeRose got a hit to
right to load the bases. Catcher Todd Jennings then hit a ball to short. The throw went
to second for one out, but the attempted double play failed as the throw to first got
away. Jennings was safe and Battenberg and Perkins scored to make it an 11-8
game.
A leadoff home run in the seventh for Haggin Grant made
it 12-8, but the Oaks came back in the bottom of the inning to tie it up at 12-12.
With one out, Williams walked, with pinch runner Todd
Wanta taking his place on first. A passed ball with Bryant at the plate sent Wanta to
second and then Bryant's hit to right advanced him to third. The next batter, Caffrey,
was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Battenberg's hit to left scored Wanta to
make it 12-9. Perkins was hit by a pitch to force in Bryant for a 12-10 score and force
Haggin Grant's pitcher out of the game. The new HG hurler gave up a hit to DeRose
to score Battenberg and Caffrey and tie the game at 12-12.
Parra got the first two batters out in the top of the eighth,
but a blooper through the infield gave Haggin Grant a base runner. He was eliminated,
however, as Jennings pegged a throw from behind the plate to Bryant at first to pick
the runner off and end the inning.
Sneath struck out to lead off the bottom of the eighth, but
the ball got away from Haggin Grant's catcher and Sneath made it safely to first.
Liebman came up next and blasted his second home run of the game to post the win
for Fair Oaks, 14-12.
