Fair Oaks 11, Citrus Heights 6 (League: 4-4, Overall: 4-5) - June 19 @ Del Campo High -
Fair Oaks began its weekend sweep of Citrus Heights with an 11-6 win over its
cross-town rivals at Del Campo High School.
The Oaks got on the scoreboard in the first inning as
center fielder L.J. Sneath led off with a hit to center. The ball was misplayed in the
outfield and Sneath advanced to second. The next batter, second baseman Nic
DeRose, struck out, but the catcher dropped the ball and Sneath advanced to third on
the throw to first. Shortstop John Perkins then sent a fly to center that allowed Sneath
to tag and score to make it 1-0.
Citrus Heights came back for three runs in the bottom of
the first off Oaks' starter Robert Wilkerson, keeping a 3-1 advantage until the third
when the Oaks scored three times to go back up 4-3.
It was again Sneath who started things off, singling to left
as the leadoff hitter. DeRose's bunt to third allowed Sneath to advance all the way to
third and then he scored on a ground ball to short by Perkins. Third baseman Joe
Liebman hit a ball to third that was booted and then catcher Todd Jennings walked.
With first baseman Ross Elmendorf at the plate, an errant pickoff attempt from the
catcher went into right field, allowing both runners to advance. Elmendorf grounded to
short, but the throw to first got away and Liebman and Jennings both scored to make
it a 4-3 Oaks lead.
Citrus Heights sent a new pitcher to the mound in the
fourth, but Post 383 added five more runs for a 9-3 lead.
Right fielder Joe Caffrey started things off with a walk and
then with designated hitter Aaron Yurchak at the plate, stole second. Yurchak flew to
right for the first out and then back-to-back walks to Sneath and DeRose loaded the
bases. Perkins hit a ball to short, beating the throw to first and allowing Caffrey to
score. Liebman then hit a ball to short, with the throw going to second. Liebman
evaded the double play, however, and Sneath scored to make it 6-3. With Jennings at
the plate, a wild pitch scored DeRose. Another wild pitch advanced Liebman to third,
with Jennings eventually walking. Elmendorf walked to load the bases and then left
fielder Jeff Williams' hit to left scored Liebman and Jennings to make it 9-3. Caffrey
followed with a hit to left, loading the bases again and driving Citrus Heights' second
pitcher from the game.
Fair Oaks added a single run in the sixth as Jennings led
off with a hit to left. With one out and Williams at the plate, Jennings took off for a
steal of second. The pitch was wild, allowing Jennings safe passage and then with two
outs and Caffrey at the plate, another wild pitch sent Jennings to third. Caffrey walked
and then got picked off first on a pre-set play. While in the rundown, Jennings scored
to make it 10-3, and Caffrey was able to make it back to first safely. Yurchak, the next
batter, grounded out, however, ending the inning.
Fair Oaks added its final run in the seventh as Sneath led
off with a hit to right center. With DeRose at the plate, Sneath stole second and went
to third on DeRose's ground ball to shortstop. Perkins' grounder to short allowed
Sneath to score to make it an 11-3 game.
Citrus Heights could get absolutely nothing going against
Wilkerson and a fine Fair Oaks defense in the fifth through eighth innings. Wilkerson
struck out two in the fifth after getting the first out on a first pitch pop to second. In the
sixth, a one out walk was erased on a pickoff from Jennings behind the plate to
Elmendorf at first. Wilkerson then struck out the batter at the plate to end the inning.
In the seventh, Wilkerson struck out the first batter he faced before allowing a hit to
right center. The next batter lined a shot to first, however, and Elmendorf made a
diving catch, then doubling the runner off first for the inning-ending out. In the eighth,
a double play erased a leadoff hit, with Wilkerson striking out the third batter to end
the inning.
Sneath came in from center field to pitch the ninth and
predictably experienced a few problems in the position change. Two walks and an
error, however, still couldn't get a run home as the leadoff runner was out at the plate
from Perkins at short to Jennings. Sneath then helped himself, picking a runner off
first for the second out. But with two outs, the runner on third stole home to make it
11-4 and then a double to right center followed by a hit to center scored two more
runs for the final 11-6 tally.
