Fair Oaks 4, Haggin Grant 3 (League: 8-1, Overall: 10-1) - June 23 @ Bella Vista High - Fair Oaks overcame a 3-1 deficit to squeeze by Haggin Grant 4-3 in a nine-inning game at Bella Vista. High.
Post 383 jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as left fielder Tim Cook drew a two out walk. He moved to second when shortstop Ricky alonso was hit by a pitch and then scored as second baseman Aaron Yurchak looped a single into center field.
The Oaks lead was short lived, however, as Haggin Grant scored twice in the fourth and again in the fifth to take a 3-1 advantage.
Fair Oaks came right back in the bottom of the fifth to go up 4-3 as third baseman Joe Liebman led off with a ground rule double to left center. Center fielder L.J. Sneath followed with a walk and then first baseman Dan Gemma hit a ball on the infield. The ensuing play was a disaster for Haggin Grant - and nearly for Fair Oaks - as Liebman and Sneath were caught in a rundown between second, third and home. Finally a throw back to second got away and all runners were safe - including Liebamn crossing the plate to make it a 3-2 game. Designated hitter Mike Wright followed with a hit to left to score Sneath, tying the game and sending Gemma to third. Haggin Grant sent a new pitcher to the mound. He struck out right fielder Matt Pudge, but then gave up a double to left center to score Gemma and make it a 4-3 game.
Starting pitcher Alex Graham, who struggled on and off early in the game, settled down and shut out Haggin Grant the rest of the way. He put Haggin Grant down in order in the top of the ninth, including striking out the final two batters to preserve the win.
