Fair Oaks 9, Haggin Grant 6 (League: 9-1, Overall: 11-1) - June 24 @ Rio Linda High - Fair Oaks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning and held on for a 9-6 win over Haggin Grant in the opening game of a doubleheader at Rio Linda High School.
The Oaks and starting pitcher Josh Gibson grabbed the lead in the third as left fielder Tim Cook led off the inning with a walk. With shortstop Rick Alonso at the plate, Cook stole second. Alonso flew out to right, but the next batter, second baseman Aaron Yurchak, also drew a walk. Catcher Doug Matlack then got a hit to right to load the bases. Third baseman Joe Liebman also drew a walk to force in Cook. Center fielder L.J. Sneath followed with a hit to left to score Yurchak, and then designated hitter Dan Gemma got a hit to right to score Matlack for a 3-0 lead.
Haggin Grant tied the game in the sixth on a two run homer with no outs and a walk, hit and error. The Oaks came right back to retake the lead in the seventh, however, as Yurchak and Matlack got hits to start off the inning. With one out, Sneath sent a ball over the left field fence to score the three runs and make it a 6-3 game.
Haggin Grant tied it back up in the bottom of the inning, but the Oaks came back again for three runs in the ninth to take the 9-6 win.
Matlack led off with a ground rule double to left center, but was erased on a play from second to third on a grounder by Liebman. Sneath walked to put two runners on and then Gemma got a hit up the middle to load the bases. This prompted Haggin Grant's second pitching change of the inning, but the new hurler hit the first batter he faced, Matt Pudge, to force in Liebman to make it 7-6. Bob Churchill then sent a ball to short. The throw went to second for the out, but the relay to first got away. Sneath and Gemma both scored to make it a 9-6 game.
Gibson closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the complete game victory, his sixth on the year against no losses.
