Fair Oaks 12, Southside 11 (League: 11-1, Overall: 13-1) - June 28 @ Bella Vista High School - Fair Oaks staged its most dramatic comeback of the year beating Southside 12-11 in an extra-inning game at Bella Vista.
Southside got on the board off starting pitcher Josh Gibson in the first inning as two walks and an error brought a run home.
But it was the third inning that shook even the most faithful Fair Oaks fans as Southside scored eight times and drove Gibson off the mound in favor of Bryce Schimmel. Three of the runs scored after the pitching change, but Schimmel eventually managed to wriggle out of the situation.
The Oaks came back with two runs in the fourth as second baseman Aaron Yurchak led off with a hit to left. With designated hitter Mike Wright at the plate, a pair of wild pitches moved Yurchak to third. Wright then got a hit to left to drive in Yurchak, and shortstop Ricky alonso followed with a hit to right. With one out, right fielder Matt Pudge hit a ball to short. The throw went to second to force first baseman Bob Churchill who had reached previously on a fielder's choice. The relay to first, however, got away and Wright scored to make it a 9-2 game.
The seven run Southside lead held over the next few innings. Yurchak took the mound in the sixth to relieve Schimmel, but promptly got in trouble as Southside loaded the bases with one out. A strikeout and ground ball, however, got Yurchak out of the inning and the Oaks came back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the score to 9-7.
Alonso led off the inning with a hit up the middle. Alex Graham then followed with a ball up the middle that the second baseman missed. With one out, left fielder Tim Cook got a hit to left to load the bases. Alonso scored as catcher Doug Matlack hit a slow roller to third. He beat the throw for a hit and then center fielder L.J. Sneath got a hit to center to score Graham and make it 9-4. Third baseman Joe Liebman followed with a hit to left to score Cook and then Matlack scored on a ground ball to third by Yurchak. Sneath was the inning's second out as he was forced at third on the play. Wright followed with a hit to center to score Liebman and make it a 9-7 game.
Yurchak put Southside down in order in the top of the seventh and the Oaks came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Pudge got a hit to left and then Cook hit a high hopper to short, beating the throw to first for a hit. Matlack then doubled to right to score Pudge. Sneath followed with a walk to load the bases and then Cook scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Liebman to tie the game. Yurchak walked to reload the bases, but a groundout by Wright ended the inning with the score still tied at 9-9.
Graham took the mound in the top of the eighth, but had difficulties early as four out of the first five batters he faced got hits to give Southside an 11-9 lead. Graham settled down to get the next two batters out, but the Oaks found themselves two runs down entering what could be their final at bat.
Fair Oaks responded, however, as Alonso led off the eighth with a double to right center. Graham followed with a hit to right and Pudge got a hit up the middle to score Alonso and make it 11-10. Cook then walked to load the bases with no outs.
It looked promising for the Oaks, but then Matlack flew to right and Sneath struck out to give Fair Oaks two outs. Liebman, the next batter, carried the count to 3-2 before walking to force in Graham with the tying run. Then Yurchak repeated the performance, also carrying the count to 3-2 before walking to force in Pudge with the winning run as the Oaks came from behind for the 12-11 victory.
