Fair Oaks 6, Post 61 2 (League: 15-2, Overall: 19-3) - July 11 @ Sacramento City College - The Oaks opened the 2000 District 6 playoffs with a convincing win over Post 61, 6-2, at Sacramento City College.
Starting pitcher Josh Gibson struck out 11 en route to the victory as the Oaks went out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning off Post 61 starter Tom Zimmerman.
Left fielder Tim Cook started things off with a walk. With second baseman Aaron Yurchak at the plate, Cook stole second, and then with two out, third baseman Joe Liebman's hit to center scored Cook to make it 1-0.
Post 61 took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Gibson ran into a little trouble and the score stayed in 61's favor until the bottom of the eighth when the Oaks scored five runs for a 6-2 lead.
Right fielder Mike Wright led off with a hit to center and was moved to second on a bunt by first baseman Bob Churchill. Designated hitter Alex Graham followed with a walk on four straight pitches, forcing Zimmerman off the mound in favor of Cameron James-Young. After getting two quick strikes on shortstop Ricky Alonso, however, James-Young threw four balls and walked Alonso to load the bases. Cook struck out for the second out of the inning, but then Yurchak drew a walk to force in Wright and center fielder L.J. Sneath followed with a hit to score Larry Lomascola who had gone in to run for Graham, and Alonso, to make it 4-2. Third baseman Joe Liebman followed with a hit to left to score Yurchak and Sneath to make it 6-2.
Gibson sent Post 61 down in order in the top of the ninth to gain the complete game victory and advance the Oaks in the winner's bracket of the District 6 Playoffs.
