Fair Oaks 5, Folsom 3 (League: 15-2, Overall: 20-3) - July 12 @ Sacramento City College - The Oaks remained in the winner's bracket in the District 6 Playoffs with a 5-3 win over the Folsom Flames.
The Flames got on the scoreboard first as Folsom touched starting pitcher Dan Gemma for a lone run in the second inning. The Oaks came right back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second as right fielder Mike Wright led off with a hit to left. A wild pitch sent him to second and then first baseman Bob Churchill's single to left advanced Wright to third. With designated hitter Alex Graham at the plate, Wright almost scored on a wild pitch, but was tagged out at the plate. Graham walked and went to second on a wild pitch, with Churchill advancing to third. Churchill scored on shortstop Ricky Alonso's fly to right to tie the game 1-1. Left fielder Tim Cook then sent a ball back to the pitcher. The throw to first was high, however, and Cook was safe with Graham scoring to make it a 2-1 game.
Folsom tied the game in the third, but the Oaks came back again with a three run bottom of the third to lead 5-2.
Walks to third baseman Joe Liebman and catcher Doug Matlack started things off. With Wright at the plate, a wild pitch advanced both runners. Wright popped out, but then Churchill got a hit to left to score Liebman. Graham then sent a ball to third. Matlack almost scored on the play, but the throw came home and he was tagged out at the plate. Alonso was the next batter and popped the ball to second. It fell in, however, and the throw went into the dugout allowing both Churchill and Graham to score to make it a 5-2 game.
Folsom picked up a run in the fifth, but that was to be their last score of the game. The Oaks had problems getting runs home, as well, loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth without scoring. Neither team challenged the rest of the way and the Oaks remained unbeaten in the tournament with the 5-3 victory.
Gemma pitched the complete game win with 12 strikeouts to his credit.
