Fair Oaks 7, West Sacramento 2 (League: 1-1, Overall: 2-1) - June 3 @ Bella Vista High - Fair Oaks recorded its first league win on the season with a 7-2 victory over West Sacramento in the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader.
West Sacramento got its only two runs of the game in the third inning after loading the bases off Oaks starting pitcher Dan Gemma. A two out hit brought in the two runs, but Fair Oaks came back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game with a pair of runs of its own.
With one out, center fielder L.J. Sneath walked. He moved to second as the next batter, third baseman Joe Liebman was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch with designated hitter Alex Graham at the plate advanced both runners. Graham struck out, but the next batter, shortstop Ricky Alonso, got a hit to center to score both runners and tie the game at 2-2.
The Oaks padded their lead in the fifth as consecutive hits to right center by second baseman Josh Gibson and catcher Mike Wright started things off. Gibson scored as right fielder Matt Pudge bunted and the throw from third sailed high to first. Wright moved to third on the play and Pudge advanced to second. Left fielder Tim Cook then hit a grounder to first. The throw came home to get Wright, but Pudge advanced to third on the throw. Cook stole second with Sneath at the plate. Sneath struck out, but the next batter, Liebman, sent a long shot over the fence in left center to score three runs and make it a 6-2 game.
Fair Oaks added its final run of the game in the eighth as Liebman hit his second home run of the game - a first pitch leadoff shot over the left field fence to make it 7-2.
Gemma allowed two walks in the top of the ninth, but escaped with no runs scoring to pick up the complete game victory and evening the Oaks' league record at 1-1.
