Fair
Oaks 11, West Sacramento 7 (League:
2-1, Overall: 3-1) - June 3 @ Bella Vista High
- Completing a sweep of their weekend doubleheader, the Fair Oaks Oaks
defeated West Sacramento 11-7 at Bella Vista High School.
Fair Oaks got
on the scoreboard first in the opening inning after two were out. Left
fielder Tim Cook reached on an error with one out and then advanced to
third on a passed ball with center fielder L.J. Sneath at the plate. Sneath
struck out, but the next batter, third baseman Joe Liebman, walked. With
designated hitter Dan Gemma at the plate, a wild pitch scored Cook. Gemma
also walked and then shortstop Ricky Alonso got a hit to right to score
Liebman to make it a 2-0 game.
The Oaks added
four more runs in the second to give starting pitcher Alex Graham a 6-0
lead. Second baseman Josh Gibson led off with a walk and scored on catcher
Doug Matlack's home run to left to make it 4-0. With one out, Cook got
a hit to left, and then Sneath followed with a home run to center to give
the Oaks a 6-0 lead.
West Sacramento
came back to score once in the third and four times in the fourth to close
the gap to 6-5, but the Oaks added a run in the bottom of the fourth to
pad their lead at 7-5.
Cook led off
with a hit to center and Sneath reached base after being hit by a pitch.
Liebman's double to left then scored Cook for the 7-5 lead.
Josh Gibson
relieved Graham in the top of the fifth, but had control problems early.
A walk and two bunts loaded the bases and then another walk forced in West
Sacramento's sixth run to make it a 7-6 game. The next three batters were
put out, however, to end the threat, including a run-saving catch in right
by Ricky LaFavor to end the inning.
West Sacramento
added another run in the sixth to tie the game. More runs may have scored
except for another great defensive play as Sneath collected the ball on
a hit to center and pegged a perfect throw to catcher Doug Matlack to get
the runner at the plate and end the inning.
Fair Oaks came
back in the bottom of the sixth to score its final four runs of the game
and take an 11-7 lead.
Sneath led off
with a soft liner to first that skipped under the fielder's glove. With
one out, Aaron Yurchak walked and then Ricky Alonso was hit by a pitch
to load the bases. Robert Barrett then hit a grounder to short. The throw
went to second, but the ball got away and rolled into center allowing Sneath,
Yurchak and Alonso to score to make it 10-7. With two outs, Matlack doubled
to right center to drive in Barrett for the final 11-7 tally.
