Fair Oaks 8, Rio Loma 7 (League: 11-0, Overall: 15-4) - July 7 @ Mira Loma High School - The Oaks held on for the win in one of their closest games of the year as they outlasted Rio Loma 8-7 in the second game of a doubleheader at Mira Loma High School.
Fair Oaks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as right fielder Garrett Holtzen reached base on an error and moved to second on a bad pickoff play. Left fielder Steve Snider sacrificed Holtzen to third and center fielder L.J. Sneath followed with a walk to put two runners on. With two outs, shortstop Josh Thompson's hit scored Snider for a 1-0 lead, moving Sneath to third. With first baseman Mike Wright at the plate, a double steal scored Sneath to give the Oaks a 2-0 lead for starting pitcher Manny Parra.
Derek Chase
The Oaks' lead was short-lived, however, as Rio Loma came back to score four times in the bottom of the second for a 4-2 lead. After Parra struck out the first batter, a string of three walks and two hits gave Rio Loma the lead. Oddly enough, all three outs in the inning came on strikeouts.
Rio Loma padded its lead in the third with another run before the Oaks came back in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead.
Third baseman Derek Chase led off the inning with a hit to left. With one out, second baseman Larry Lomascola got a hit to right, followed by a walk to Holtzen to load the bases. Snider then got a hit to right to score Chase to close the score to 5-3 and keep the bases loaded. The big blow, however, came as Sneath came to the plate and launched the ball over the left center field fence for a grand slam home run, giving the Oaks an 7-5 lead. Parra followed with another home run over the right field fence, upping the Fair Oaks lead to 8-5.
Dan Gemma relieved Parra in the bottom of the inning and shut Rio Loma down until the sixth when three straight hits added up to a Rio Loma run and an 8-6 score. Holtzen relieved Gemma on the mound and gave up an additional run, but the Oaks escaped the inning still in the lead, 8-7.
Fair Oaks went out in order in the top of the seventh, but Holtzen matched Rio Loma's effort and sent them down in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve Fair Oaks' unbeaten league record and the 8-7 victory.
