Fair Oaks 9, Vacaville 3 (League: 12-0, Overall: 22-5) - July 27 @ Yountville - Fair Oaks' bats finally came alive and the Oaks received another stellar pitching performance as Post 383 downed the Vacaville Dodgers 9-3 in second round action in the Area 1 tournament in Yountville.
Catcher Doug Matlack and center fielder L.J. Sneath hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning and Manny Parra turned in a complete-game four-hitter striking out 11 Vacaville batters.
Fair Oaks struck early as Post 383 scored three times in the first inning off Vacaville starter Eric Dakin. With one out, second baseman Josh Thompson drew a walk. Matlack followed with a hit up the middle and then Sneath walked to load the bases. Parra was hit by a pitch to force in Thompson for a 1-0 lead and then a hit to right field by third baseman Mike Wright scored Matlack to make it 2-0. Right fielder Garrett Holtzen then hit a ground ball to short to score Sneath and give the Oaks a 3-0 lead. Wright was forced at second, but Holtzen beat the throw to first to keep the inning alive. The next batter, first baseman Ryan Knippschild, ended the inning with a strikeout.
Parra put Vacaville down in order in the bottom of the inning and then Fair Oaks came back for another run in the top of the second. The first batter, shortstop Derek Chase, struck out, but then left fielder Tim Cook was hit by a pitch to put a runner on. Cook stole second with Thompson at the plate. Thompson struck out for the second out of the inning, but a hit to center by Matlack brought home Cook to make it a 4-0 lead.

The Dodgers couldn't do a thing with Parra in the second through fourth innings and the Oaks came back to make it a 6-0 game in the top of the fifth off reliever Price Kendall. Sneath and Parra started things off with consecutive walks and then with one out, Holtzen hit a high bouncer through the infield into right to load the bases. Knippschild drew a walk on four straight pitches to force in Sneath to make it 5-0 and a ground ball to short by Chase scored Parra to give the Oaks a 6-0 lead.
Vacaville again went down in the fifth despite a hit. A Thompson to Knippschild double play ended the inning and the Oaks went back to work in the top of the sixth as they scored three more runs.
Cook and Thompson recorded outs to start the inning and then Matlack powered a home run over the left center field fence for a 7-0 lead. Sneath followed with a homer to right to make it 8-0. Parra was hit by a pitch and Wright walked to put two more runners on and Parra scored on a hit to center by Holtzen for a 9-0 lead.
Parra got in a bit of trouble in the bottom of the inning as an error on a slow roller on the infield put a runner on. A walk followed and then with one out a hit to right by shortstop Brian Colip loaded the bases. Left fielder Bill Steverman got a hit to left to score one run and a passed ball brought in another to make it 2-0. The next batter - second baseman Kevin Dahl - hit a ball back through the mound and off Parra's glove. No one could pick up the ball and another run scored to make it a 9-3 game. The inning finally ended as third baseman Ryan Bruns hit a ball to Chase at short. Chase threw to Thompson for the force of Dahl, who slid and took Thompson out. Bruns was also called out as the umpire ruled Dahl had run out of the baseline to take Thompson out.
Kory Maxwell took the mound for Vacaville in the seventh and despite a hit by Cook, shut the Oaks down. Parra threw two ground balls in the bottom of the inning and finished things off with a strikeout to end the game and give the Oaks the 9-3 victory.
