Fair Oaks 13, West Sacramento 8 (League: 4-0, Overall: 5-0) - June 9 @ Bella Vista High - The Oaks continued to dominate league play with a 13-8 victory over West Sacramento in the opening game of a doubleheader at Bella Vista High School.
West Sacramento jumped out to a 3-0 lead off Fair Oaks starter Robert Barrett, but the Oaks came back in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-3 lead and stake Barrett to an advantage he would never give up.
Catcher Doug Matlack led off the inning with a first-pitch home run over the left field fence to close the score to 3-1. Second baseman Josh Thompson was then hit by a pitch, but was thrown out
trying to steal second with third baseman Mike Wright at the plate. Wright got a hit to left, as did the next batter, first baseman Dan Gemma. With two outs, designated hitter Kyle Carden hit the ball toward third. It was knocked down, but a play couldn't be made and the bases were loaded.
With left fielder Tim Cook at the plate, a balk sent Wright home to score. Cook walked to reload the bases and then a double down the right field line by right fielder Garrett Holtzen brought home Gemma and Carden to give the Oaks a 4-3 lead.
Fair Oaks padded its lead in the third as Matlack hit a ball that bounced over the right center field fence for a ground rule double. Thompson then sent a ball into right center that dropped among three converging West Sac. players for another double. Matlack had to hold up and could only make it to third on the play, but then scored on a wild pitch with Wright at the plate. A hit by Gemma to right center scored Thompson to make it 6-3. Shortstop Derek Chase was then hit by a pitch and he and Gemma scored on a double down the right field line by Carden to make it 8-3. A West Sac. pitching change didn't help as Cook reached on a ground ball to short, beating the throw, and then Holtzen walked to load the bases. Sneath then sent a ground ball to short. The throw went to second for an out, but the throw to first for a double play was wide and went into the dugout allowing Carden and Cook to score to make it a 10-3 game.
West Sacramento closed the gap as they loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth and went on to score four runs for a 10-7 game, but the Oaks came back for a run in the bottom of the fourth to pad their lead.
Thompson led off with a hit to center, but was erased on a ground ball to second by Wright. Gemma followed with a double to right, however, to score Wright and make it 11-7.
The Oaks scored two more times in the bottom of the eighth as Gemma hit a ball to short with one out. The throw to first was dropped, allowing him to reach safely. Chase was then hit by a pitch and with two outs, Cook delivered a hit to left to score Gemma and send Chase to third. Holtzen's gorund ball to second scored Chase to give the Oaks their final run and make it a 13-7 game.
West Sacramento managed one run in the top of the ninth, but the Oaks held on for the 13-8 victory.
