Post 383's starting pitcher Dixon Allen sends a pitch toward home in the Oaks' 3-1 win over Folsom. Allen pitched a complete game for the Oaks.
Fair Oaks 3, Folsom 1 (League: 1-0, Overall: 1-0) - May 29 @ Bella Vista High - Fair Oaks started the 2002 season with a win as Post 383 defeated the Folsom Flames 3-1 at Bella Vista High School.
Folsom got off to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as a walk, passed ball and hit to left field sent a runner to third. An error on the next play allowed Folsom's base runner to come home to make it a 1-0 game. Oaks' starting pitcher Dixon Allen struck out the next two batters, however, and then fielded a line drive back to the mound to end the inning.
The Oaks came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning as right fielder Bill Rhinehart walked to start things off. With first baseman Devin Spurling at the plate, Rhinehart stole second. Spurling grounded out, but with designated hitter Doug Matlack at the plate, the Oaks turned it into a 1-1 game. Matlack grounded to third and Rhinehart advanced as the throw went to first. The throw back to third got away and Rhinehart was able to score to tie the contest.
It wasn't an easy win for the Oaks. Folsom loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth on a series of errors, but then Allen pitched two consecutive ground balls to first with the throw coming home to catcher Joe Gaggero for the first two outs of the inning and then got the next batter to fly out to left fielder Charles Smith to end the inning.
Fair Oaks came back in the bottom of the inning to score twice and make it a 3-1 contest.
Smith led off with a hit to center and advanced to third on a double by Rhinehart. Both runners scored on a double by Spurling to give the Oaks a 3-1 advantage.
Allen handled the Flames in the fifth and sixth before getting into a little trouble in the top of the seventh. A pair of hits put two runners on with one out, but Allen got the next batter to ground to Josh Thompson at short. Thompson stepped on second and then relayed the ball to first for a game-ending double play to give the Oaks the victory.
