The Oaks watch the action during Monday's game against West Sacramento. Fair Oaks won the game 7-2 to improve its record to 10-5 on the season.
Fair Oaks 7, West Sacramento 2 (League: 10-5, Overall: 10-5) - June 24 @ Bella Vista High School - Fair Oaks extended its winning streak to three games Monday with a 7-2 victory over West Sacramento at Bella Vista High School.
West Sacramento scored first with a run in the opening inning off Oaks starter Brian Janowiak. The game stayed a 1-0 contest until the Oaks tied it up in the bottom of the second with a lone run.
First baseman Devin Spurling led off with a ground rule double to left that sparked some debate as to whether the ball cleared the fence for a homer, or whether the West Sacramento outfielder buffaloed the umpire by throwing his hands in the air to indicate the ball had bounced over. Catcher Doug Matlack followed with a walk and then with second baseman A.J. Vidlund at the plate, a wild pitch sent Spurling to third. He scored on Vidlund's fly to right to tie the game.
West Sacramento came back to retake the lead in the third and held the advantage until the bottom of the fourth when the Oaks collected three runs.
In the top of the inning, however, two spectacular plays by shortstop Josh Thompson to Spurling at first probably saved West Sacramento from scoring. After a leadoff double and one out, Thompson took a ground ball going away, turned and fired in mid-air and a leaping Spurling gathered the ball in for the out. On the very next play Thompson bare-handed the ball and made an off-balance throw to first where Spurling again collected the throw for the third out of the inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Matlack reached base with one out when a ball to short took - or failed to take - a hop as it reached the fielder. Matlack moved to second on a grounder to short by Vidlund and took third on a pitch in the dirt with designated hitter Mike Wright at the plate. A balk scored Matlack and then Wright walked. With third baseman Derek Chase at the plate, Wright stole second. Chase was hit by a pitch and with center fielder Garrett Holtzen at the plate, a wild pitch advanced both runners. Holtzen followed with a hit up the middle that scored Wright and Chase, making it a 4-2 game.
The Oaks added two more runs in the fifth as right fielder Bill Rhinehart singled to right to start things off. With one out, Spurling homered to left field to make it a 6-2 lead.
Janowiak, who had sent West Sacramento down in order in the fifth, repeated the performance in the sixth and the Oaks came back in the bottom of the inning for their final run of the game.
Wright led off with a hit to center prompting a WS pitching change, but the new hurler failed to cool things down as the next batter, Chase, doubled to bring home Wright and make it a 7-2 game.
Despite a one out hit in the top of the seventh, a double play ended West Sacramento's chances and the Oaks held on for the 7-2 victory.
