Josh Thompson dives back into first base after a third inning pickoff attempt in the Oaks game vs. Yolo June 26 in Woodland.
Yolo 5, Fair Oaks 4 (League: 10-6, Overall: 10-6) - June 26 @ Clark Field, Woodland - Almost, but not quite. Fair Oaks almost beat Yolo Post 77 Wednesday night in Woodland, but a bases loaded hit in the ninth inning sent the Oaks down to a 5-4 loss, while keeping Yolo's record unblemished at 16-0.
The Oaks took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after two were out as center fielder Garrett Holtzen reached base on an errant throw from shortstop. Shortstop Josh Thompson followed with a hit to center, moving Holtzen to third. With right fielder Bill Rhinehart at the plate, Thompson stole second. Rhinehart then got a hit to center to score both Holtzen and Thompson for a 2-0 Oaks' lead.
Fair Oaks starter Dixon Allen ran into some problems in the bottom of the third as misplays, errors and hits combined for four Yolo runs to give Post 77 a 4-2 lead.
A pitching dual ensued between Allen and Yolo's Matt Long into the sixth when Allen again got himself in trouble, sandwiching two outs between two hit batters and a walk to load the bases. Allen struck out the next batter, however, to get out of the inning.
The Oaks came back in the top of the seventh to tie the game and send it into extra innings, as pinch hitter Mike Wright got a hit to center field with one out to start things off. Steve Snider went in to run for Wright, but was erased as Holtzen hit a ground ball to short. The throw went to second, but Holtzen beat the relay to first to avoid the double play.
Thompson then grounded a ball to third, but Yolo's third baseman couldn't make the throw, giving the Oaks two runners on base. Rhinehart then sent a ball just fair into right field for a double, scoring both Holtzen and Thompson to make it a 4-4 game.
Yolo went out in order in the bottom of the seventh, as did Fair Oaks in the top of the eighth. Post 77 got a runner as far as third in the bottom of the eighth, but failed to score, but in the ninth, the decisive run came home.
Allen gave up a leadoff walk and then had the runner advance to second on a steal before a ground ball to Mickey Weisser at first with a relay to Allen covering got the first out. Unfortunately, this also allowed the runner to advance to third.
Trying for a force at any base, Allen intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases. Then Yolo's Mike Redford poked the ball just out of reach of right fielder Rhinehart to send the winning run home for a 5-4 Yolo victory.
