Brian Janowiak pitched a complete-game victory for the Oaks in the opening round of the playoffs.
Fair Oaks 7, Post 61 2 (League: 16-6, Overall: 22-6) - July 12 @ Sacramento City College - After thumping Post 61 19-0 only a few days earlier, Fair Oaks had a bit tougher time of it in the opening round of the District 6 playoffs, as a scrappy Sacramento team took an early lead before finally falling 7-2.
Post 61 got two runs in the first inning as shortstop Adam Carolan doubled to left to lead off the inning and then advanced to third as the throw back to the infield got away. Carolan scored on center fielder Caleb Betschart's hit to right and then pitcher Kevin Irwin-DiLoreto followed with a single up the middle sending Betschart to third. With first baseman Fernando Galli at the plate, DiLoreto stole second and then Galli's ground ball to short scored Betschart to make it 2-0.
Post 61, which only had nine players for the game, put the Oaks down easily in the first and second innings, but then Fair Oaks' bats came alive in the third as the Oaks scored four times to take a 4-2 lead.
With one out, third baseman Mike Wright got a hit up the middle and center fielder Garrett Holtzen followed with a walk. Shortstop Josh Thompson's hit to center scored Wright and Thompson made it to second when center Betschart in center couldn't find the handle on the ball. Holtzen advanced to third on the play.
Both runners scored as right fielder Bill Rhinehart got a solid hit into right center.
With first baseman Devin Spurling at the plate, Rhinehart stole second. Spurling recorded the second out of the inning with a fly to center, but designated hitter Mickey Weisser followed with a double into the right field corner to score Rhinehart and make it a 4-2 game.
Other than hitting the leadoff batter in the top of the fourth and giving up singles in the seventh and eighth, Janowiak handled Post 61 easily the rest of the game.
Catcher Doug Matlack watches a low pitch come in during the seventh inning of the Oaks' 7-2 victory over Post 61 at Sacramento City College on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Oaks scored single runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth to tally their final victory score of 7-2.
In the fourth, catcher Doug Matlack's leadoff double to right followed by second baseman A.J. Vidlund's double to left accountede for run No. 5. In the seventh, Rhinehart got a one out walk and moved to third on a Spurling double to left. A walk to Weisser loaded the bases and then with two outs and Matlack at the plate, an errant throw from the catcher back to the mound got away and Rhinehart scored to make it 6-2.
The Oaks scored their final run in the eighth as Wright got a one out hit to left. With Holtzen at the plate, Wright ran and Holtzen hit the ball toward second, catching second baseman Sean Nelson moving the wrong way. Nelson couldn't make a play and both runners were safe.
With Thompson at the plate, Wright and Holtzen pulled a double steal. But then Thompson hit a ball to third and the throw came home to get Wright. Wright reversed direction, however as the ball got away from the catcher and was safe back at third with Thompson making it safely to first to load the bases.     Rhinehart then sent a sacrifice fly deep to right to bring in Wright and the Oaks owned a 7-2 lead over Post 61.
Janowiak put Sacramento down in order in the top of the ninth as the Oaks advanced to the second round of the District 6 playoffs.
