Third baseman Mike Wright takes a lead off first base after a third inning hit in the Oaks 10-3 win over Folsom Saturday night at Union Field.
Fair Oaks 10, Folsom 3 (League: 16-6, Overall: 23-6) - July 13 @ Sacramento City College - The Oaks remained in the winner's bracket of the District 6 Championships with a 10-3 victory over the Folsom Flames at Sacramento City College Saturday night.
Folsom went up 2-0 in the first inning off starting pitcher Dixon Allen, but the Oaks came right back to tie the game in the top of the second with two runs of their own.
First baseman Devin Spurling started things off in the second as he rolled a ball past Folsom shortstop Neil Corbin. Left fielder Mickey Weisser followed with a walko off Folsom pitcher Daniel Lewis. With designated hitter Charles Smith at the plate, a wild pitch advanced both runners and then Smith walked to load the bases.
With catcher Doug Matlack at the plate, Spurling tried to score from third on a wild pitch, but was tagged out at the plate. Matlack then hit a ball to third. Weisser, who had advanced to third on the wild pitch, dived back into the bag ahead of a tag try by Folsom third bagger Jason Stoneburner. Weisser was safe and Matlack also made it safely to first to reload the bases.
With two outs, second baseman Derek Chase walked to force in Weisser and then a walk to center fielder Garrett Holtzen forced in Smith to tie the game at 2-2.
The Oaks added four more runs in the third inning as right fielder Bill Rhinehart reached first after a bad throw on a ground ball to second. Spurling followed with a walk and then with Weisser at the plate, a wild pitch advanced both runners.
Weisser struck out and then with Smith at the plate, a passed ball scored Rhinehart to make it 3-2. Smith walked and then Matlack doubled to left to score Spurling and make it a 4-2 game.
Matlack's hit drove Lewis from the mound in favor of Craig Ames, but Ames gave up a hit to third baseman Mike Wright to score Smith and then a sacrifice fly to Chase that scored Matlack to make it 6-2.
The Oaks added another run in the fourth after two were out as Spurling clubbed the ball over the left field fence for a solo home run to bring the score to 7-2.
Folsom continued to struggle at the plate against Allen as the Flames went down in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth and wasted a seventh inning hit as center fielder Tony Savio tried to stretch a single into a double.
Meanwhile the Oaks made it 8-2 in the sixth as Rhinehart popped a ball up with one out and saw it fall between Folsom's third baseman and shortstop as each fielder apparently thought the other was going to catch it.
With two outs, Weisser got a hit up the middle to move Rhinehart to second and then Smith hit a ball to short that resulted in a bad throw to first that loaded the bases. Matlack then drew a walk to force in Rhinehart and make it a six run lead for the Oaks.
Fair Oaks scored its final two runs in the eighth as Spurling led off with a walk. He moved to second on a hit up the middle by Weisser and then Smith's hit to left scored Spurling to make it 9-2.
With one out, Wright got a hit to right to load the bases and then a sacrifice fly to center by Chase scored Weisser to give the Oaks a 10-2 lead.
Folsom got its final run in the ninth - mostly due to misplays by the Oaks. Corbin led off the inning with a hit to left and moved to third as the next batter hit a ball to short. A bad throw to second got away allowing Corbin to advance. Allen struck out the next two batters, but then a wild pitch scored Corbin to make it 10-3.
Allen came back to strike out the next batter, however, ending the inning and the game with the Oaks prevailing 10-3.
