Night games seem to agree with Post 383 as the Oaks came from behind to win a 16-10 contest over Post 61 at Renfree Field on May 30.
Fair Oaks 16, Post 61 10 (League: 2-1, Overall: 2-1) - May 30 @ Renfree Field - Coming back from a loss in the opening game of a doubleheader, the Oaks staged a late-inning comeback to beat Post 61 16-10 at Renfree Field.
Post 61 scored once in the opening inning off Oaks' starter Kris Wright, but Post 383 came back for a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 lead.
Center fielder Garrett Holtzen led off with a strikeout, but a passed ball allowed him to reach first safely. Shortstop Josh Thompson followed with a hit to left, sending Holtzen to second. Two outs followed, but then catcher Joe Gaggero got a hit to right center to drive Holtzen in and then Thompson scored as designated hitter Doug Matlack hit a ball to third that was booted, making it a 2-1 Fair Oaks lead.
Post 61 went back in front in the second with a pair of runs, but the Oaks stormed back in the bottom of the second with five runs for a 7-3 advantage.
Third baseman Steve Snider led off the inning with a hit to left. First baseman Andrew Gallagher's sacrifice bunt sent Snider to second and then with two outs, Thompson's hit to center scored Snider to make it 3-3. Thompson took second on the throw home.
Right Fielder Bill Rhinehart was the next batter and he delivered a hit to left to score Thompson and advanced to second on a throw back to first that got away. Left fielder Charles Smith sent Rhinehart home with a triple to center to make it 5-3 and then Gaggero put the ball over the left field fence to score Smith and himself to make it a 7-3 Oaks lead.
Post 61 came back to tie the game at 7-7 in the top of the third, forcing Wright from the mound in favor of Mike Zeleski. The Oaks went back up in the bottom of the inning as Snider led off with a walk. Snider stole second with Gallagher at the plate and then with one out scored on a Holtzen hit to make it 8-7.
Post 61 wouldn't go down, as the Sacramento team scored three times in the fourth to go back ahead by a 10-8 margin, forcing yet another Oaks pitching change as Derek Chase took the mound.
The Oaks closed the gap to one run in the bottom of the inning as Smith led off with a hit to right. A pickoff attempt with Gaggero at the plate got away, allowing Smith to take second. Then with one out, a fly deep to right by designated hitter Doug Matlack, allowed Smith to score all the way from second to make it 10-9.
The Oaks went back in front in the fifth with a pair of runs as Post 61's pitching went south. With two outs, consecutive walks to Holtzen, Thompson and Rhinehart loaded the bases. Smith then hit a grounder to third that was booted allowing Holtzen to score. A walk to Gaggero then forced in Thompson to make it an 11-10 Oaks lead.
Post 61 loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but excellent defense by the Oaks prevented any runs from scoring.
Post 383 came back in the sixth with five more runs to extend its lead to 16-10.
Chase led off with a hit to left and then stole second with Snider at the plate as Post 61 thought a balk had been called. A Snider bunt sent Chase to third and then Gallagher's suicide squeeze scored Chase to make it 12-10 with Gallagher safely making it to first.
Gallagher stole second with Holtzen at the plate and then with two outs, Thompson walked. A wild pitch with Rhinehart at the plate sent Thompson to second and Gallagher to third. Both runners scored when Rhinehart sent a hit into right field to make it 14-10.
Smith followed with a hit to right center moving Rhinehart to third. With Gaggero at the plate, Smith stole second and then Gaggero's double to left center scored both runners to make it a 16-10 game.
Rhinehart took the mound for the Oaks in the top of the seventh, allowing only one base runner on a bad throw to first from short with one out. A fly to right and ground ball to third ended the game, giving the Oaks win No. 2 on the season.
