Catcher Joe Gaggero grabs the ball as Yolo batter Matt Long strikes out during the fourth inning of the Oaks game against Post 77 Tuesday at Sacramento City College. The Oaks won the game 2-1 to claim the Dist. 6 title.
Fair Oaks 2, Yolo 1 (League: 16-6, Overall: 26-6) - July 16 @ Sacramento City College - Fair Oaks used another outstanding complete-game pitching performance and great defense to claim the 2002 District 6 title Tuesday night as the Oaks defeated Yolo by a score of 2-1 at Sacramento City College.
The Oaks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as center fielder Bill Rhinehart hit a solo home run over the right field wall with two outs.
Fair Oaks came back to lead 2-0 in the second inning aided by a pair of costly Yolo errors. Right fielder Mickey Weisser led off the inning with a ground ball to short. Yolo's shortstop Karl Coulson, however, tried to pick the ball up several times and couldn't find the handle allowing Weisser to reach base safely.
Left fielder Charles Smith followed with a hit to right to move Weisser to second and then third baseman Mike Wright hit a ball to short. The throw went to second to get Smith, but the relay to first baseman Matt Pulley got away and Weisser scored to make it a 2-0 game.
Yolo scored its lone run of the game in the third as two consecutive hits and a ground ball moved Yolo's catcher Juan Medrano to third. A ground ball to short by left fielder Dan Cody scored Medrano to make it 2-1.
Little did the two high scoring teams know, but that was to be the last run of the game. Holtzen for the Oaks and Long for Yolo settled into a pitcher's duel with neither team really able to mount much in the way of offense the rest of the game.
A walk to Weisser in the fourth and hit by Smith with one out put two runners on, but the effort was ended on a double play.
Yolo had single runners in the fifth and sixth and two runners in the seventh, but that also ended with a double play.
The Oaks' late-inning base runners came in the sixth as Rhinehart walked, the seventh as Wright was hit by a pitch and in the eighth as designated hitter Doug Matlack doubled with one out.
Holtzen put Yolo down in order in the eighth and ninth innings to give the Oaks their second straight District 6 title.
