Fair Oaks' Garrett Holtzen looks in for the sign as the scoreboard in the background tells the tale of the game. The Oaks led 12-3 in the eighth over Eureka on Saturday, eventually winning the game by a score of 12-4.
Fair Oaks 12, Eureka 4 (League: 16-6, Overall: 28-7) - July 27 @ Yountville, Calif. - Fair Oaks Post 383 continued to pound the ball Saturday as the Oaks picked up another win in the Area 1 playoffs in Yountville. Post 383 beat Eureka 12-4 with 13 hits that included first inning home runs by center fielder Bill Rhinehart and left fielder Charles Smith.
The Oaks went up 4-0 in the top of the first inning as shortstop Josh Thompson drew a one out walk followed by Rhinehart's home run over the right field fence. Right fielder Mickey Weisser then drew a walk and with second baseman Doug Matlack at the plate, Weisser stole second and then went to third as the throw got away and went into center field. Weisser scored on Matlack's ground ball to short and then Smith jacked the ball out of the park for a solo home run over the center field fence to bring the score to 4-0.
A hit and an error got one run back for Eureka in the bottom of the inning, but the Oaks answered back in the top of the second as third baseman Steve Snider led off with a hit to right field. Snider stole second with pitcher Garrett Holtzen at the plate. Holtzen struck out, but then a hit by Thompson to left moved Snider to third. He scored on Rhinehart's fly to right to make it a 5-1 game.
The Oaks extended their lead to 11-1 in the third as Matlack led off with a hit to left and Smith was hit by a pitch. This prompted a Eureka pitching change, with the new hurler, Steve Morgan, facing first baseman Devin Spurling. Spurling grounded back to the pitcher, but the throw to first was bad and Spurling was safe. Smith advanced to third on the play with Matlack scoring to make it 6-1.
Catcher Joe Gaggero then flew to right to score Smith. With two outs, Holtzen walked and then a Thompson single scored Spurling to make it 8-1. Rhinehart walked to load the bases and then a hit to right by Weisser scored Holtzen and Thompson to make it 10-1. Matlack followed with a hit to left to score Rhinehart and the Oaks took an 11-1 lead.
Fair Oaks added its 12th run in the fifth inning as Rhinehart led off with a hit to left. Weisser hit a ground ball to short with the throw going to second to force Rhinehart. With Matlack at the plate, Weisser stole second. Matlack struck out, but then Smith doubled to left to score Weisser to make it a 12-1 game.
Holtzen pitched successfully into the seventh inning when Eureka's Dennis Wolfe and Steve Morgan hit back-to-back home runs to bring the score to 12-3.
Holtzen got out of the inning with no further damage, however, and despite a hit and an error in the eighth, Eureka failed to score, keeping the Oaks' lead at nine runs.
Eureka faced reliever Derek Chase in the ninth, using two hits and a walk to load the bases with one out. Fair Oaks almost got out of the inning on a near double play as the next batter hit a ball to Thompson at short. Thompson tried to tag the runner going into second, but missed, but fired the ball to first to get the batter for the second out of the inning. Unfortunately, Eureka scored a run on the play to bring the score to 12-4. The next batter flew out to right field, however, to end the game and give the Oaks a 12-4 victory.
