Fair Oaks center fielder Steve Snider lays down a bunt in the fifth inning of the Oaks 8-1 victory over Ft. Sutter. The Oaks used the victory to cap off a doubleheader sweep of Sutter.
Fair Oaks 8, Ft. Sutter 1 (League: 4-1, Overall: 4-1) - June 1 @ Bella Vista High School - Fair Oaks again held its opponent to only one run as the Oaks completed a doubleheader sweep of Ft. Sutter, 8-1. The Oaks won the first game of the twin bill 11-1.
Post 383 went up by one in the first inning as designated hitter Garrett Holtzen led off with a walk. Shortstop Josh Thompson followed with a hit to center that sent Holtzen to third. Unfortunately, Holtzen was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score on a ground ball by the next batter, first baseman Bill Rhinehart. Thompson had stole second, however, when Rhinehart was at the plate, and came home to score on a hit to deep short by left fielder Charles Smith to make it 1-0.
The Oaks added a second run in the second inning as center fielder Steve Snider was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Holtzen walked and then Thompson sent a ball up the middle that hit the umpire and bounded away from all the fielders. With the bases loaded, Rhinehart hit a pop behind the pitcher's mound that fell in, scoring Snider to make it a 2-0 game.
Post 383 expanded its lead to three in the fourth inning after right fielder Mike Wright started things of getting hit by a pitch. Holtzen followed with a bunt toward third, beating the throw to first and sending Wright to second. The next batter, Thompson, sent a fly to center that allowed Wright to tag and make it to third. Then with Rhinehart at the plate, Holtzen stole second. Rhinehart then sent a fly to right to score Wright and make it a 3-0 game.
The Oaks' big inning came in the fifth as four more runs came across. Catcher Joe Gaggero led off with a ball to short that was booted. Second baseman A.J. Vidlund then lined a ball off the pitcher's glove, resulting in no play at first or second. Snider then came to the plate and bunted. The throw to first pulled the fielder off the bag and the Oaks had the bases loaded with no outs.
Ft. Sutter's fielding woes continued as the next batter, Derek Chase, popped the ball to shortstop behind second. The ball was dropped and Gaggero scored to make it 4-0. Sutter got its first out as Wright grounded to short with the throw coming home to force Vidlund. Holtzen then grounded to second to score Snider. The throw to first gave Ft. Sutter two outs over the Oaks. But two more runs came home as Thompson doubled to left field, scoring both Chase and Wright to make it a 7-0 game.
Fort Sutter got its only run of the game off starting pitcher Mickey Weisser on a leadoff double. The runner advanced to third on a pitch in the dirt on the next batter and then scored on a fly to right for a 7-1 game.
The Oaks scored their final run as Gaggero led off the sixth with a double to right center. A wild pitch with Vidlund at the plate sent Gaggero to third. Vidlund struck out, but the next batter, Snider, sent a fly to left that allowed Gaggero to tag and come home, making it an 8-1 game.
Doug Matlack came in to pitch the top of the seventh, hitting one batter, but striking out three of the four he faced to give the Oaks the 8-1 win.
