Oaks manager Don Barney (24) holds a strategy session on the mound with Fair Oaks' infield and pitcher Kris Wright during the fourth inning of Post 383's game against Folsom.
Folsom 14, Fair Oaks 4 (League: 5-2, Overall: 5-2) - June 5 @ Folsom High School - It's been Fair Oaks who has been doing the thumping, but this time it was the Oaks' turn to get thumped as olsom ran away from Post 383 for a 14-4 victory at Folsom High School.
Fair Oaks struck first in the game, as left fielder Steve Snider was hit by a pitch with one out. Right fielder Bill Rhinehart sent Snider to third on a ball to third that resulted in a bad throw to first with both runners being safe. Second baseman Doug Matlack's sacrifice fly to left scored Snider to make it a 1-0 game.
Folsom came back in the bottom of the inning to rough up Oaks' starter Mike Zeleski, scoring four runs on a pair of hits, two walks and sloppy infield play.
The Oaks came back with a pair of runs in the third as Holtzen was hit by a pitch with one out. Snider and Rhinehart followed with walks to load the bases. A passed ball with Matlack at the plate brought Holtzen home and then Matlack hit his second sacrifice fly in as many at-bats to bring in Snider to make it a 4-3 game.
Folsom added two more runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth, chasing Zeleski in the third in favor of Kris Wright.
The Oaks scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth as Rhinehart led off with a double to right. With Matlack at the plate, a passed ball sent Rhinehart to third and then Matlack's grounder to second scored Rhinehart to make it 7-4.
Folsom came back in the bottom of the inning, however, to score four more runs and force another Oaks pitching change with Snider coming in from left to take the mound.
Snider struggled as well, however, throwing several wild pitches before getting a pair of outs. Then the roof caved in as Folsom got three hits and a walk to bring home three more runs for a 14-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh, two quick outs to pinch hitters Josh Thompson and Brian Janowiak all but killed the Oaks' chances for a comeback. Pinch hitter Charles Smith doubled to center and Rhinehart drew a walk, but it was too little, too late as a Matlack fly to center ended the game with Folsom on top.
