Oaks left hander Garrett Holtzen fires a pitch toward a Manhart batter in Post 383's 7-4 win over Manhart at Land Park. Holtzen didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning and gave up only four in eight innings pitched.
Fair Oaks 7, Manhart 4 (League: 6-3, Overall: 6-3) - June 8 @ William Land Park - Bolstered by another strong pitching performance from Garrett Holtzen, Fair Oaks rebounded from two straight losses to defeat Manhart 7-4 and get back in the win column, Saturday, June 8, at William Land Park.
Holtzen held Manhart hitless through four and two thirds innings, while the Oaks built a 6-0 lead over their opponent.
Five of the runs came in the bottom of the third as catcher Joe Gaggero led off with a double to left field. Center fielder Steve Snider followed with a bunt down the first base line for a hit, sending Gaggero to third. Left fielder Charles Smith then doubled to left to score Gaggero and shortstop Josh Thompson doubled to send both Snider and Smith home for a 3-0 Oaks lead. Right fielder Bill Rhinehart added another run to the Oaks' tally as he got a hit to right to score Thompson. Rhinehart eventually made his way to third with one out, and then a fly to center by designated hitter Devon Spurling sent Rhinehart home to make it a 5-0 game.
Fair Oaks faced a new pitcher in the top of the fourth, but still added to its run total as Snider led off with a hit to left. With Smith at the plate, Snider stole second and scored on a Smith hit to center. The Oaks possibly could have had more as Thompson followed with a hit to right, but Smith was thrown out trying to take third on the play. The next two batters recorded outs to end the inning with the Oaks leading 6-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Holtzen gave up his first hit of the game after two were out - a double to right, but Manhart was unable to score. The Oaks added another run in the seventh as Spurling hit a ground ball to short. The throw went to first, but was bobbled slightly at the bag and Spurling was safe. Second baseman A.J. Vidlund followed with a hit to left and then with two outs, Snider got a hit up the middle that scored Spurling to make it 7-0.
Holtzen lost his control in the bottom of the seventh, but still managed to escape with only one run being scored. A leadoff triple and then two walks with one out loaded the bases. Another walk forced in a run, but the Oaks got out of the inning with a 7-1 lead.
Manhart again loaded the bases in the eighth, but couldn't bring any runs home. In the ninth, Derek Chase took the mound and ran into some problems after two were out.
Chase gave up a leadoff hit to left before striking out the next two batters. But then two consecutive walks loaded the bases. Chase hit the next batter to force in a run and make it 7-2, and then a hit to center brought home two more runs to make it a 7-4 game.
The next batter popped out to Mickey Weisser at first to end the game and preserve the Oaks' 7-4 victory.
