Fair Oaks pitcher Dixon Allen prepares to let loose with a pitch as second baseman Larry Lomascola watches in the background during the Oaks' 2003 opener against West Sacramento.
West Sacramento 10, Fair Oaks 1 (League: 0-1, Overall: 0-1) - May 27 @ River City High - Despite loading the bases in the first inning, Fair Oaks was held scoreless in its opening game of the 2003 season until the seventh inning as West Sacramento downed Post 383 10-1 at River City High School.
The Oaks put their first four batters on base, but failed to socre in the first inning as shortstop Josh Thompson led off with a walk. With left fielder Sam Ferra at the plate, a wil pitch sent Thompson to second and another wild pitch saw him head to third, but he was thrown out in a close play at the bag.
Ferra was then hit by a pitch, as was the next batter, center fielder Charles Smith. A walk to right fielder Todd atkinson loaded the bases, but then designated hitter A.J. Vidlund hit into a double play to end the inning with no runs crossing the plate.
West Sacramento roughed up Oaks starting pitcher Dixon Allen over the next two innings, scoring twice in the bottom of the first and five times in the second for a 7-0 lead.
Except for a single by second baseman Larry Lomascola in the top of the second, Fair Oaks' usually potent offense disappeared on opening day. A hit up the middle by first baseman Tyler Robertson in the sixth and a seventh inning hit to center by Smith were all Fair Oaks could tally.
West Sacramento added three more runs in the sixth for a 10-0 lead. The Oaks' only run came in the top of the seventh as Larry Lomascola was hit by a pitch with one out. Wild pitches with Thompson at the plate advanced Lomascola to third. Thompson walked and thenFerra bounced a ball to third with the play going to second allowing Lomascola to score to make it 10-1.
Allen took the loss for the Oaks with Vidlund and Derek Chase also spending time on the mound for the Oaks.
