Don Barney (24) holds a meeting on the mound during the sixth inning of the Oaks game against Post 61 at Renfree Field.
Post 61 13, Fair Oaks 5 (League: 9-3, Overall: 9-3) - June 17 @ Renfree Field - After leading early on 2-0, Fair Oaks couldn't muster an offense - or a defense - as Post 61 scored 13 times en route to a 13-5 victory over the Oaks.
Post 383 took a 1-0 lead in the first after consecutive errors put center fielder Steve Snider and second baseman Larry Lomascola on base. With one out, designated hitter Charles Smith's double to center scored Snider to give the Oaks an early lead.
Run No. 2 scored in the second as shortstop Derek Chase got a hit off pitcher Austin Facino's glove and then went to second on a bad throw to first. With catcher Joe Gaggero at the plate, a wild pitch sent Chase to third where he scored on Gaggero's fly ball to center for a 2-0 Oaks lead.
That was pretty much the highlight reel for the Oaks, however, as Post 61 scored once in the third and four times in the fourth for a 5-2 advantage. Post 61's Kevin Dawidczik was hit by a pitch with one out, got balked to second and then scored on Russ Hocking's hit to left. In the fourth, Oaks starter Dixon Allen got in trouble as a hit by Caleb Betschart, a walk to Ben Gale and a hit by Anthony Munoz to deep short loaded the bases.
Post 61 then ran a squeeze play with the runners charging and Kevin DiLoretto bunting that scored Betschart to tie the game at 2-2. Gale scored on a bunt by Dawidczik to make it 3-2 and a walk to Adam Roach reloaded the bases. Hocking then got a hit down the third base line to score Munoz and DiLoretto to give Post 61 a 5-2 lead.
The Oaks got one back in the top of the fifth as Snider led off with a double to left center. Then, after two were out, and with Smith at the plate, a pickoff play that went into center field scored Snider all the way from second base to make it a 5-3 game.
Post 61 added two more runs in the sixth and loaded the bases forcing Allen's departure from the mound in favor of David Breisacher. Jason Roach doubled off Breisacher to clear the bases and then he scored on a bunt by Gale and a misplay on the coverage at first to give 61 an 11-3 lead.
The Oaks scored again in the seventh as left fielder Chris Tipton led off with a hit up the middle. Snider followed with a walk, but was erased at second as Larry Lomascola hit a ground ball to third. Tipton scored from third, however, as the next batter, right fielder Bill Rhinehart, sent a fly to center to make it an 11-4 game.
Post 61 added another two runs in the eighth as Betschart led off with a hit to left. He scored on a double to center by Jason Roach, who in turn scored after moving to third on the throw to the plate, on a ground ball to short by Munoz to make it a 13-4 game.
The Oaks managed one final run in the ninth as Gaggero led off with a walk. A wild pitch with one out to Snider moved him to second and then he scored on a double by A.J. Vidlund for the final 13-5 tally.
