Fair Oaks 7, West Sacramento 5 (League: 12-4, Overall: 12-4) - June 20 @ Bella Vista High - The Oaks overcame a 5-2 deficit in the seventh inning to snatch a 7-5 victory from West Sacramento with a three-run, two-out home run by Bill Rhinehart.
Pitcher Kris Wright put West Sacramento down in order in the top of the first and the Oaks came back to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning as shortstop Josh Thompson led off with a hit to left field. With designated hitter Mickey Weisser at the plate, Thompson stole second and then moved to third as both Weisser and center fielder Bill Rhinehart drew walks. Right fielder Charles Smith brought Thompson and Weisser home with a hit to center field to give the Oaks the early advantage.
Three West Sacramento hits tied the game up in the top of the second, however, and West Sacramento went up 5-2 with a single run in the fifth and a two run home run in the sixth.
Weisser took the mound to get the final out of the sixth via strikeout and put West Sacramento down in order in the seventh to bring the Oaks up for one final at bat in the seventh.
Trailing 5-2, Matt Schirmer bounced a ball over the right center field fence for a ground rule double. Schirmer had replaced left fielder Sam Ferra (who had just replced Chris Tipton one inning earlier) in the sixth after Ferra made a diving catch for the second out of the inning. Catcher Joe Gaggero was then hit by a pitch and third baseman A.J. Vidlund loaded the bases as he hit a ball to third. The play went to second too late to get Gaggero.
Derek Chase went in to run for Vidlund, but the Oaks suffered a setback as the next batter, Thompson, was caught looking at a third strike. The Oaks got a break, however, as Weisser hit a ball to third. The ordinarily easy throw to first went wide and allowed Weisser to reach safely and both Schirmer and Gaggero to scamper home to make it a 5-4 game.
With two outs, Rhinehart came to the plate. Rhinehart had flown out to left field his previous two times at bat. This time he lined the first pitch over the right field fence to score Chase and Weisser ahead of himself and give the Oaks the 7-5 victory.
The win improved Fair Oaks' record to 12-4 in District 6 play.
