San Leandro 15, Fair Oaks 8 (League: 16-7, Overall: 16-8) - July 3 @ Moana Stadium, Reno NV. - The San Leandro Rangers capitalized on seven Fair Oaks errors in building an 11-0 lead en route to a 15-8 thrashing of the Oaks in the opening game of the 2003 Peppermill Classic in Reno.
Mickey Weisser leads off first base in the fourth inning of the Oaks 15-8 loss to San Leandro in the Peppermill Classic in Reno July 3.
Fair Oaks found itself staring at a 2-0 deficit in the first and despite loading the bases with one out in the second could not score against Rangers' pitcher Craig Alaniz.
San Leandro scored nine more runs in the third off Oaks starter Brian Janowiak. Three erros in the inning, two walks and five hits - including three doubles - put the Oaks in a hole they'd never be able to climb out of.
In the bottom of the third, the Oaks bad luck continued as the first two batters struck out. Shortstop Josh Thompson then hit a ball to the base of the wall in left for what appeared to be a double, but on the appeal, the umpire said Thompson never touched first and he was ruled out to end Post 383's two-out rally.
Janowiak put San Leandro down in order in the fourth and the Oaks came back to score their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the inning as first baseman Mickey Weisser led off with a ground ball to first that got by the first baseman and allowed him to reach safely. Left fielder Charles Smith followed with a hit to left and then with two outs, designated hitter Matt Schirmer got a hit to center to score Weisser. Catcher Joe Gaggero followed with a hit to left to score Smith and bring the tally to 11-2 in favor of the Rangers.
After another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth, the Oaks picked up another run as center fielder Steve Snider was hit by a pitch to start things off. Then with one out, Weisser got a hit to left and Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter struck out, but then Snider scored as second baseman Larry Lomascola was also hit by a pitch to force the run in and make it 11-3.
The Oaks rally continued in the sixth as nine batters came to the plate and four runs scored to make it a 11-7 game.
With one out, third baseman Jason Lomascola got a hit to right. Snider then bunted back to the pitcher, but beat the throw for a hit. With two out and Weisser at the plate, a balk scored Jasob Lomascola from third. Weisser then doubled to score Snider and make it an 11-5 contest.
Smith followed with a ball to short that went off the shortstop's glove and right fielder A.J. Vidlund hit a ball to second that just got by the second baseman and scored Weisser to make it 11-6. Larry Lomascola followed with a hit through the right side of the infield to score Smith and close the gape to only four runs at 11-7.
Errors again plagued the Oaks, however, as San Leandro started off the seventh with a pair of hits and a wild pickoff throw from the pitcher resulted in a run scoring to make it 12-7. The Rangers weren't through though as they sent eight batters to the plate and scored a total of four runs to make it a 15-7 game.
Thompson replaced Janowiak on the mound midway through the inning, but gave up a double to score the last run before striking out the final batter to end the inning.
Fair Oaks also faced a new pitcher in the seventh and greeted him with consecutive hits by Gaggero and Jason Lomascola. Then with two outs, a hit up the middle by Weisser scored Dave Breisacher (who was running for Gaggero) to make it a 15-8 game.
That was the extend of Fair Oaks' rally, however, as the Oaks dropped the opening game of the tournament to the San Leandro Rangers.
