Fair Oaks second baseman Larry Lomascola takes a lead off first base in the fifth inning of the Oaks 12-4 victory over Post 61 in the District 6 tournament at Sacramento City College.
Fair Oaks 12, Post 61 4 (League: 17-7, Overall: 22-11) - July 13 @ Sacramento City College - The Oaks may have fallen behind early (again) in their playoff game vs. Post 61, but by the end of the contest their was no doubt who was in charge as Post 383 pounded out 18 hits for a 12-4 victory.
Post 61 scored four times in the top of the third and had the bases loaded with two outs before Oaks starter Tyler Robertson struck out Jason Roach to end the inning.
The Oaks came back for two runs in the bottom of the third as first baseman Mickey Weisser got a one out hit to center to start things off. Right fielder Bill Rhinehart followed with a drive to the fence in left field. Left fielder Adam Roach made a valiant try at a leaping catch only to have the ball pop out of his glove as he crashed against the fence. Rhinehart wound up with a double on the play. The next batter, designated hitter Charles Smith, drew three balls and then was intentionally walked to load the bases. Second baseman Larry Lomascola then got a hit to left to score Weisser and make it a 4-1 game. Third baseman A.J. Vidlund followed with a ground ball to third that allowed Rhinehart to score to cut Post 61's lead to 4-2.
The Oaks faced a new pitcher in the fourth as starter Austen Facino was replaced by William Bucher. Bucher got the Oaks out - facing only three batters despite a walk to center fielder Steve Snider - as a double play ended the inning.
But the Oaks came back in the fifth to take the lead as they scored three times to make it a 5-4 game. Rhinehart started things off as he sent a fly to left field that was lost in the sun and dropped in for a double. Rhinehart was apparently injured on the play and was replaced on second by Matt Schirmer. With one out, Lomascola hit a ball deep to short. The throw to first was low and Lomascola was safe. Vidlund then sent a fly to center that allowed Schirmer to tage and score to make it a 4-3 game. Catcher Joe Gaggero followed with a hit to center and then both Lomascola and Gagggero scored on shortstop Josh Thompson's triple to center to give the Oaks a 5-4 lead.
The Oaks faced another new pitcher in the sixth as Russ Hocking took the mound. But Hocking couldn't stop the Oaks either as Post 383 scored four more runs.
With one out, Weisser hit a ball to second. The throw to first was wide and he was safe. Schirmer then drew a walk and Smith followed with a hit to left that scored Weisser to make it a 6-4 game.
With two outs, Vidlund doubled to right field to score Schirmer, bringing the score to 7-4. Gaggero was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Smith and Vidlund scored on a hit to left field by Thompson to give the Oaks a 9-4 advantage.
The turnstile on the mound continued in the seventh for Post 61 as Ben Gale took to the hill. But again the Oaks pounded the Post 61 hurler, scoring three more runs for a 12-4 lead.
With one out, Weisser doubled to right. With Schirmer at the plate, Weisser stole third and then scored on a passed ball to make it 10-4.
Schirmer walked and advanced to second with Smith at the plate on another passed ball. Smith then doubled to bring Schirmer in for an 11-4 lead. Lomascola followed with a hit to left that moved Smith to third. He then scored on a fly to right by Vidlund to give the Oaks a 12-4 lead.
Robertson struck out the side in the top of the eighth and the Oaks shut down Post 61 in the ninth - including a game-ending diving catch in center field by shortstop Josh Thompson.
Robertson pitched Fair Oaks' third straight complete game of the playoffs, striking out 12 Post 61 batters en route to the victory.
