Fair Oaks 9, Yolo 3 (League: 17-7, Overall: 24-11) - July 16 @ Renfree Field - Fair Oaks took a 1-0 series lead as the Oaks defeated Yolo 9-3 in the opening game of the District 6 Championship Series at Renfree Field.
Fair Oaks ran up a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as center fielder Steve Snider was hit by a pitch to start things off. With one out, first baseman Mickey Weisser walked and then right fielder Charles Smith followed with a drive to center field that tipped off Yolo center fielder Dan Cody's glove and scored both Snider and Weisser and allowed Smith to reach third.
Yolo answered back with a pair of runs in the third after Oaks starter Dixon Allen gave up a pair of walks and a double, but Post 383 got one run back in the top of the fourth as catcher Joe Gaggero and designated hitter Jason Lomascola recorded back-to-back hits to start off the inning.
With one out, Snider hit a ball to short with the throw going to second to get Lomascola, but the relay to first was late and Snider avoided the double play. Shortstop Josh Thompson then hit a ball to short that was booted allowing Gaggero to score to make it a 4-2 game.
The Oaks exploded for five runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach as Jason Lomascola led off with a double to left center. Left fielder Derek Chase followed with a bunt that Yolo pitcher Jeff Woodard fielded, but couldn't make a play on. Snider also bunted to move the runners to second and third and then both scored as Thompson delivered a hit to left to make it 6-2. Thompson took second on the throw home.
With Weisser at the plate, Thompson stole third and then he scored on Weisser's hit to right. Smith followed with a hit to left and then with two outs, a hit to center by third baseman A.J. Vidlund scored Weisser to make it an 8-2 game.
Gaggero followed with a hit to left to score Smith and give the Oaks a 9-2 advantage and force a Yolo pitching change as Nick Miller replaced Woodard on the mound. Miller got the final out of the inning, but the damage was already done.
Yolo managed a lone run in the seventh for the final 9-3 margin and Allen went on to hold Post 77 scoreless in the final two innings to record the complete game victory.
