Oaks catcher Joe Gaggero dives back into first base after a second inning walk in Post 383's 5-4 loss to Yolo.
Yolo 5, Fair Oaks 4 (League: 17-7, Overall: 24-12) - July 17 @ Renfree Field - Yolo came back to even things up at 1-1 with an extra-inning 5-4 victory over Fair Oaks in the District 6 Championship Series at Renfree Field.
Fair Oaks took an early 1-0 lead in the game as the Oaks scored in the bottom of the first. Center fielder Steve Snider led off for the second straight day by getting hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a bunt by shortstop Josh Thompson. First baseman Mickey Weisser followed with a walk to put two runners on with one out and then a hit to right by pitcher Charles Smith scored Snider to give the Oaks a 1-0 lead.
Yolo tied the game up in the top of the second, however, and the game remained knotted as Smith and Yolo starter Brandon Boyd engaged in a pitcher's duel up until the seventh when Yolo used the most of a Brian Anderson hit, a bunt by Brandon Aoki and a passed ball to score the go ahead run.
Both teams ran into problems late in the game as Smith was replaced on the mound in the eighth by Tyler Robertson and Boyd by Matt Long midway through the ninth.
The Oaks tied the game in the ninth as right fielder A.J. Vidlund got a one out hit and catcher Joe Gaggero drew a walk to give the Oaks two base runners and force Boyd off the mound. Third baseman Jason Lomascola then hit a ball to short that was booted to load the bases and pinch hitter Bill Rhinehart delivered a hit to left to score Matt Schirmer who had gone in to run for Vidlund. Two ground balls on the infield followed, however, as the Oaks failed to put the game away in the ninth.
Dave Breisacher came in to pitch the top of the 10th for the Oaks and Yolo scored a single run to take a 3-2 lead, but the Oaks came back to tie the game again in the bottom of the 10th as first baseman Mickey Weisser hit a ball to right that went off right fielder Jeff Hoppin's glove allowing Weisser to reach second with no outs. Smith was hit by a pitch to give the Oaks a pair of base runners and the runners moved to second and third on a bunt by second baseman Larry Lomascola.
Schirmer then flew to center field allowing Weisser to tag and score to tie the game at 3-3.
A pair of doubles allowed Yolo to retake the lead in the top of the 11th, but again the Oaks came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning at 4-4.
With one out, Breisacher, Snider and Thompson got consecutive hits to load the bases and then a Weisser ground ball to short scored Breisacher to tie the game. The Oaks again failed to bring the winning run home though.
In the 12th, Yolo again took the lead with a single run to make it 5-4. This time, however, there was no miracle comeback for the Oaks as Post 383 went out in order in the bottom of the 12th to give Yolo the one run victory and force a third and deciding game in the series.
