Yolo 11, Fair Oaks 10 (League: 17-7, Overall: 24-13) - July 17 @ Renfree Field - For the second straight game Yolo Post 77 took Fair Oaks extra innings - outlasting the Oaks 11-10 - to claim the District 6 championship for 2003.
Post 383 got on the scoreboard first as the Oaks scored two times in the opening inning for a 2-0 lead. With two outs pitcher Mickey Weisser and left fielder Charles Smith drew walks and then Weisser scored on a close play at the plate on a hit to right by second baseman Larry Lomascola. Third baseman A.J. Vidlund followed with another hit that scored Smith to give the Oaks the two run advantage.
Fair Oaks lead was short lived, however, as Yolo scored five times in the second. The Oaks got one run back in the top of the third as Smith doubled to left center with one out and scored after two were out on a Vidlund hit to right field.
Fair Oaks tied the game back up in the fourth as first baseman Tyler Robertson led off with a hit to right. He was forced at second, however, as right fielder Matt Schirmer grounded to short. With two outs, shortstop Josh Thompson got a hit to left and then Weisser's hit to right scored Schirmer to make it 5-4. With Smith at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Thompson to come home and tie the contest at 5-5.
Yolo jumped right back into the lead though as Post 77 scored two times in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-5 advantage.
Post 383 made it a one run game in the sixth as Robertson led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Robertson stole third with center fielder Steve Snider at the plate and then scored on Snider's hit to left to make it a 7-6 game.
Brian Janowiak pitched the bottom of the sixth for Fair Oaks, holding Yolo scoreless and then was replaced on the mound by Dixon Allen who came in to pitch the start of the seventh.
Allen, who had pitched the Oaks to a 9-3 win in the first game of the series, gave up a hit and two walks to load the bases with two outs. Allen then hit Yolo's Brian Anderson to force in a run and give Yolo an 8-6 lead.
The Oaks battled back in the eighth, however, to take a 9-8 advantage and force Nick Miller off the mound in favor of Matt Long. Miller had replaced starter Tim Carter in the fifth inning.
Snider led off with a hit to right and then with one out, Weisser also got a hit to right field. With Smith at the plate, a pitch in the dirt allowed Snider to take third and then Smith hit the ball to short where it was bobbled for an error that allowed Snider to score. Lomascola followed with a hit up the middle to score WEisser and tie the game at 8-8, forcing Miller out in favor of Long. A ground ball by Vidlund moved Lomascola to second and Smith to third and Smith scored as catcher Joe Gaggero hit a ball to short that was booted making it a 9-8 game.
Robertson came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth for the Oaks, but an error and a walk led to a Yolo run to tie the game back up at 9-9.
Fair Oaks went back in the lead in the ninth as a high throw to first on a leadoff ball hit to short by Snider gave the Oaks a base runner. Thompson bunted Snider to second and with Weisser at the plate, a wild pitch moved him to third. Snider scored on Weisser's hit to center to give the Oaks a 10-9 lead.
Yolo came back to tie the game again in the bottom of the ninth as a hit brought home a run after two were out.
Tied at 10-10, the game went into extra innings. Fair Oaks got a leadoff hit from Lomascola in the top of the 10th and Lomascola moved to second on a bunt by Vidlund. But the Oaks were unable to get him home as a strikeout and ground ball ended the inning.
Long led off the bottom of the 10th with a ground ball to short that went for an error and was moved to second on a bunt by Jeff Lopez. The next batter, Greg Finazzo was hit by a pitch to give Yolo two base runners with only one out. It was center fielder Dan Cody's hit to center that did the damgage though as Long came in to score the winning run to end Fair Oaks' season.
The victory advanced Yolo to the Area 1 Playoffs in Red Bluff on July 23.
