Oaks starter Kris Wright sends a pitch toward home in Post 383's 16-11 victory over Rio Loma in the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader.
Fair Oaks 16, Rio Loma 11 (League: 2-2, Overall: 2-2) - May 31 @ Bella Vista High - Fair Oaks overcame an early-inning deficit to defeat Rio Loma 16-11 in the openeing game of a doubleheader at Bella Vista High School.
Visiting Rio Loma jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Oaks starting pitcher Kris Wright, who gave up three hits including a triple and home run after two were out.
The Oaks got one run back in the bottom of the second as first baseman Tyler Robertson led off with a hit to right field. He moved to second as designated hitter Larry Lomascola got a hit down the third base line and then after two were out, a hit to center by catcher Joe Gaggero scored Robertson to make it 3-1.
Rio Loma came back for two more runs in the third, however, but the Oaks answered back in the bottom of the inning with another single run to make it 5-2. Center fielder Steve Snider led off with a hit to right and moved to second on a bunt back to the pitcher by second baseman Josh Thompson. Right fielder Mickey Weisser then got a hit to left that got by the left fielder and Snider scored to close the gap to three.
Rio Loma extended its lead back to four in the fourth inning, but the Oaks came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth at 6-6.
Left fielder Matt Schirmer was hit by a pitch to start things off and then shortstop Derek Chase followed with a double. Gaggero then lined the ball off the back of the pitcher's head for a hit that scored Schirmer and sent Chase to third.
Rio Loma changed hurlers due to the injury, but their new pitcher gave up a single to third baseman Jason Lomascola that scored Chase to make it 6-4.
A sacrifice bunt by Snider advanced the runners to second and third and then a Thompson hit to left scored Gaggero to make it 6-5. A ground ball by Weisser scored the Oaks' final run of the inning to make it a 6-6 game.
Fair Oaks added another pair of runs in the fifth as Larry Lomascola led off with a hit to right. Schirmer followed with a home run to left to make it an 8-6 game. The Oaks went on to load the bases with two outs on a walk to Gaggero, a hit by Jason Lomascola and a walk to Thompson, but did not bring any further runs across the plate.
Rio Loma re-tied the game in the sixth with a two-run homer, but the Oaks exploded in the bottom of the inning for five more runs to make it a 13-8 game.
Robertson and Larry Lomascola led off with back-to-back walks and then Schirmer doubled to left to score Robertson to make it 9-8. With one out, Gaggero walked to load the bases and Schirmer scored on a hit to center by Jason Lomascola to make it 10-8. With Snider at the plate, a wild pitch scored Chase to make it 11-8 and then a fly to right by Snider scored Gaggero to make it 12-8. The final run of the inning scored on a Thompson double to left that brought home Jason Lomascola for a 13-8 Oaks lead.
Rio Loma added a single run in the seventh off Wright. Todd Atkinson came in to relieve Wright in the eighth and gave up a pair of runs to make it a 13-11 game, but the Oaks struck back in the bottom of the eighth with three runs for the final 16-11 score.
After both Gaggero and Jason Lomascola struck out to lead off the inning, Snider bunted to third for a hit. Thompson followed with a hit to left with Snider running, allowing Snider to reach third. With Weisser at the plate, a passed ball scored Snider to make it 14-11. Weisser then homered to right to score Thompson ahead of himself to make it a 16-11 game.
Atkinson put down Rio Loma in order in the top of the ninth to preserve the win and even the Oaks' record at 2-2 on the year.
