Fair Oaks 9, Yolo 6 (League: 5-2, Overall: 5-2) - June 5 @ Clark Field, Woodland - Bolstered by seven Post 77 errors, Fair Oaks struck early and held on for a 9-6 victory in the first meeting of 2003 between the District 6 rivals.
Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the first off Oaks starter Dixon Allen, Yolo failed to score in the opening inning and Fair Oaks came back with five runs in the top of the second for a commanding lead.
Left fielder Matt Schirmer led off with a ground ball Yolo shortstop Brian Anderson, but the throw to first was low and Schirmer was ruled safe. Third baseman Jason Lomascola then got a hit to left off Anderson's glove and catcher Joe Gaggero followed with a hit to left to score Schirmer for a 1-0 lead.
Designated hitter Tyler Robertson followed with a hit to left to load the bases and then shortstop Derek Chase hit a ball to short that was booted and Lomascola scored from third.
Center fielder Steve Snider followed with a hit to right center to score Gaggero and Robertson and then second baseman Larry Lomascola got a hit to center to score Chase and make it aq 5-0 game.
Yolo managed to get two runs back in the third after a walk to left fielder Brian Hawkins and a hit to right by Jeff Lopez. Hawkins scored on a ground ball to third by right fielder Greg Finazzo to make it 5-1. After a strikeout of Matt Long, three consecutive walks forced in Lopez to make it 5-2.
Yolo closed the gap to only one with another pair of runs in the fourth off Allen. With one out, Hawkins got a hit to left and then Lopez was hit by a pitch. With two outs, a Long hit to center scored both runners to make it 5-4.
Brian Janowiak replaced Allen on the mound to start the Yolo fifth and despite allowing a "tweener" hit by second baseman Brandon Aoki that dropped in the midst of Larry Lomascola at second, Snider in Center and Charles Smith in right and a walk to Hawkins, got out of the inning unscathed.
The Oaks came back in the sixth for another four runs to extend their lead to 9-4.
Robertson led off with a hit to center, but was picked off first by Boyd. Chase then walked, Snider was hit by a pitch and Larry Lomascola walked to load the bases.
Boyd was replaced on the mound by Nick Miller who promptly gave up a hit to first baseman Mickey Weisser, scoring both Chase and Snider. With Smith at the plate, a wild pitch scored Larry Lomascola and moved Weisser to third. Smith struck out, but then Weisser was able to score as the next batter - pinch hitter Sam Ferra - sent a fly to center that was dropped to make it a 9-4 game.
Yolo came back in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double by Finazzo. He moved to third on a fly to right by Long and then scored on a fly to right by catcher Evan Schloredt to make it 9-5.
Fair Oaks made some rumblings in the top of the seventh, but couldn't score. Yolo came back in the bottom of the inning with consecutive hits by Anderson, Aoki and Hawkins to score a run to make it 9-6.
After a fly to right by Lopez for the second out, Finazzo was hit by a pitch to load the bases prompting an Oaks pitching change with Robertson replacing Janowiak.
Robertson struck out Long, but the ball got away from Gaggero and the final out came as Aoki was forced at the plate on a throw by Gaggero back to Robertson who had come in to cover home.
