Right fielder Bill Rhinehart waits for a pitch in the Oaks 7-6 extra-inning win over Manhart. Rhinehart clubbed a two-run homer in the fifth to aid in the victory.
Fair Oaks 7, Manhart 6 (League: 7-2, Overall: 7-2) - June 9 @ Bella Vista High - Fair Oaks wasted a 6-2 lead, but came back to win a 7-6 decision over Manhart after Manhart tied the game in the seventh inning to force extra innings.
Starting pitcher David Breisacher held Manhart scoreless through four innings and the Oaks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as center fielder Steve Snider led off the inning with a hit to left.
With first baseman Mickey Weisser at the plate, a wil pitch sent Snider to second. Weisser then walked, but was doubled off as right fielder Bill Rhinehart lined a pitch to first. Snider scored, however, as the next batter, designated hitter Charles Smith, got a hit to left making it a 1-0 contest.
Manhart came back in the top of the fifth to score twice and take its only lead of the game. The Oaks answered right back in the bottom of the inning with five runs to go back in front by a 6-2 margin.
Third baseman Jason Lomascola led off with a double to left and then scored on catcher Joe Gaggero's home run to right center to make it a 3-2 game. After two were out, Snider got a hit to right to force a Manhart pitching change. The new hurler wasn't effective, however, as Snider stole second with Weisser at the plate and then scored as Weisser hit a ball to center that barely escaped being caught. Rhinehart followed with a home run to right to score Weisser and himself to make it a 6-2 game.
After a leadoff walk by Breisacher to open the sixth, Kris Wright took the mound for the Oaks and probably would have escaped the inning unscathed had it not been for a pair of errors and an untimely hit.
Manhart came back to load the bases and score three times to close the score to 6-5. Then, a leadoff homer in the seventh, tied the game at 6-6.
Neither team could muster an offense over the next few innings. Brian Janowiak took the mound for the Oaks in the top of the eighth and put Manhart down in order in both the eighth and the ninth.
Finally in the bottom of the ninth, the Oaks broke through. Snider walked to lead off the inning, forcing yet another Manhart pitching change. Weisser walked off the new hurler, but then Rhinehart grounded to third where Snider was forced out at the bag. Smith then grounded a ball to second, setting up a potential double play. The throw went to short to get Rhinehart, but the relay to first was wild and Weisser scored to give the Oaks the 7-6 victory.
