Fair Oaks' Chris Rinaudo leads off second base after a second inning hit to center field. Rinaudo took second on a bad pickoff attempt from Yolo's pitcher with two outs. Rinaudo was unable to score, however, as the next batter struck out.
Fair Oaks 6, Yolo 4 (League: 1-0, Overall: 1-0) - June 2 @ Woodland, Calif. - A shorthanded Fair Oaks team scored five times in the seventh inning for a come from behind 6-4 victory over Yolo at Clark Field in Woodland.
The Oaks only had 12 players suited up for the game, but made the most of what they had despite trailing 4-1 going into the seventh.
Yolo scored three times in the third off Post 383 starter Dustin Aimes as an error and three hits contributed to the early lead for Post 77.
The Oaks came back with a run in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-1 game as center fielder Ryan Stevens was hit by a pitch with one out and then with two out and first baseman Trevor Lewis at the plate stole second. Lewis then got a hit to right field to send Stevens home to make it 3-1.
Charles Smith came in to pitch the fifth for Fair Oaks, but looked a little rusty on the mound as he gave up a walk and hit the next batter to put two runners on for Yolo. Fortunately the next batter hit into a double play, but center fielder Brian Hawkins who got the leadoff walk was able to move to third on the play. He scored on a bloop into left that fell in between left fielder Steve Rinaudo and shortstop Kyle Richardson. Both players appeared to have a chance at the ball, but neither apparently called for it.
Yolo took its 4-1 lead into the top of the seventh, but then the roof caved in as the Oaks scored five times.
Lewis led off with a hit to right center, but was thrown out trying to steal with second baseman Chris Rinaudo at the plate. Rinaudo and pinch hitter Derek Chase both drew walks and then right fielder Joe Burson's hit to center loaded the bases.
Smith followed with a hit to right that scored Chris Rinaudo and Chase and Smith took second on the throw home. Pinch hitter Jesse Olson then hit a ball to third that was bobbled allowing Burson to score and tie the game at 4-4. Third baseman Jason Lomascola then got a hit to right center that scored Smith and forced a Yolo pitching change.
The new hurler, Sean Milligan, got Stevens to hit a ground ball to second, but Olson scored on the play to give the Oaks a 6-4 lead.
Smith handled Yolo in the bottom of the seventh and eighth and then was relieved by Brian Janowiak to start the ninth. Janowiak gave up a hit and a walk and was replaced on the mound by Stevens with two runners on and no outs. Stevens got the next three batters to preserve the win and spoil Yolo's 2004 home opener.
