Mickey Weisser sends a pitch toward home in the Oaks' game against West Sacramento. Weisser pitched a complete-game 4-1 win, striking out 10 along the way.
Fair Oaks 4, West Sacramento 1 (League: 7-3, Overall: 7-3) - June 22 @ River City High School - Mickey Weisser recorded 10 strike outs en route to a complete-game 4-1 victory over West Sacramento at River City High School.
Despite tight pitching on both sides early on, the Oaks came up with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as center fielder Ryan Stevens led off with a hit to center field. With third baseman Jason Lomascola at the plate, Stevens stole second. Lomascola struck out, but via left fielder Charles Smith's ground ball to short, Stevens was able to move over to third. Weisser then got a hit to right center to score Stevens and make it a 1-0 game.
The game turned into a pitcher's duel after that with neither team scoring again until the fifth inning when Weisser ran into some trouble - giving up a base hit and three consecutive walks - to allow West Sacramento its only run of the game.
The contest remained tied until the top of the seventh when first baseman Tyler Robertson started things off with a hit to center field. Robertson moved to second on a bunt by right fielder Trevor Lewis and then scored on shortstop Kyle Richardson's hit to center field to make it a 2-1 game.
Weisser again ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning as three walks loaded the bases with two outs. Weisser struck out the next batter, however, to end the inning.
The Oaks added another run in the eighth as back-to-back walks with one out to Smith and second baseman Chris Rinaudo, and a hit off the pitcher's glove by Robertson loaded the bases. Steve Rinaudo's ground ball to short then allowed Weisser to score to make it 3-1.
West Sacramento went down in order in the bottom of the eighth and the Oaks added an insurance run in the top of the ninth off a new West Sacramento pitcher.
Catcher Joe Gaggero started things off with a leadoff walk and then moved to second on Stevens hit to left field. A bunt by Lomascola rolled between the pitcher's mound and third. The throw by the pitcher went to third in an attempt to get Gaggero, but everyone was safe and the bases were loaded. Smith then hit into a 6-4-3 double play, but Gaggero scored from third for a 4-1 Oaks lead.
Weisser, who was unhitable in the final two innings, sent West Sacramento down in order - including two strike outs - in the ninth to give Post 383 the win.
