Fair Oaks' Tyler Robertson delivers a sixth inning pitch to a Yolo batter in the opening game of the June 5 doubleheader at Bella Vista High School. Yolo went on to win the game 3-2.
Yolo 3, Fair Oaks 2 (League: 1-1, Overall: 1-1) - June 5 @ Bella Vista High School - Yolo Post 77 gained revenge on Fair Oaks in the first game of a doubleheader, as the Woodland team beat Post 383 in its home opener, 3-2 at Bella Vista High School. Fair Oaks had spoiled Yolo's home opener several days before in Woodland, beating Post 77 by a score of 6-4.
Fair Oaks jumped out to an early lead as center fielder Ryan Stevens hit a leadoff, first-pitch home run over the center field fence in the first inning for a 1-0 Oaks lead.
Starting pitcher Tyler Robertson contained Yolo through five innings and the Oaks scored again in the bottom of the fifth for a 2-0 lead. Catcher Jesse Olson was hit by a pitch to start things off and moved to second on a bunt by right fielder Joe Burson. The next batter - shortstop Derek Chase - then hit a ball that was deflected off the pitcher's glove and rolled to shortstop. Chase beat the throw to first and was safe. Stevens then walked to load the bases and Olson scored on a fly ball to left by first baseman Mickey Weisser.
Yolo tied the game with a lone run in the top of the sixth and allowed Fair Oaks only single base runners in the sixth and seventh innings. In the eighth, the Oaks got a leadoff hit from Weisser, but he was erased as Robertson hit a ball to first with the throw going to second. Robertson was replaced by pinch runner Kyle Richardson, but the next batter - third baseman Jason Lomascola - lined a shot to short and Richardson was doubled off to end the inning.
Brent Fuhrman took over on the mound to start the ninth and gave up back-to-back walks to start the inning. An error on a line drive to first contributed to Yolo scoring its third run of the game giving Post 77 a 3-2 lead.
Fair Oaks got two base runners on in the bottom of the ninth on a one out hit by second baseman Chris Rinaudo followed by Olson getting hit by a pitch. But the next two batters flew out to the outfield to end the game and give Yolo its first league win against two losses.
